  2. Evidence for Evolution

  3. Evolution: • Process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms

  4. Why start with Evidence: • The Theory of Evolution is the most scientifically-supported theory that describes the bountiful diversity we see on our planet today. • Before we begin looking at what evolution is and how it works, I’d like to explore the support for it

  5. Evidence 1: Fossil Record • Highlights the changes in animal/plant life over millions of years

  6. Evidence 2: Embryological Development • The developing embryo of vastly different species show remarkable similarities which reflect an evolutionary process

  7. Evidence 3: Body Structure Homologies • Homologous structures show how adaptations use existing body plans and changes them to suit new needs

  8. Evidence 4: Chemical similarities • Cytochrome-C and Haemoglobin (very complex proteins) are shared between diverse organisms

  9. Evidence 5: Similarity in DNA sequences • DNA sequences that code for specific genes remain nearly untouched throughout many organisms in Earth’s biome • DNA shared with chimpanzee: 99% • DNA shared with banana: 50%

  10. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) • Credited with being the first to establish an idea of common ancestry for species • Wrote “The Origin of Species” after travelling around the world and studying animal and plant life
