The United Nations (UN) comprises several key organs, including the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. Five Main Organs • General Assembly- 193 Member States • Security Council- 5 permanent and 15 non-permanent • Economic and Social Council- 54 Member States • International Court of Justice- 15 Judges • Trusteeship Council • Secretariat
General Assembly • Think of it as a Parliament of nations that meet to consider the world’s important problems • Each member has one vote • Important matters such as international peace and security, admitting new members, UN budget are decided by 2/3 majority. • The Assembly holds its annual regular session from September to December
Security Council • Main job is maintain international peace and security • Permanent members: China, France, Russia, UK, US • Non Perm members: two-year terms • Decisions require 9 yes votes • Procedural questions- a permanent member can veto • The council can enforce decisions using sanctions and authorize “all necessary means” – collective military action
Economic and Social Council • Coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations and UN family • Voting in the Council is by simple majority; each member has one vote. • 54 members with three year terms
The International Cour of Justice • World Court, judicial organ of UN • Hague, Netherlands • 15 judges selected by General Assembly and Security Council • Decides disputes between countries • Participation is voluntary but the countries must comply with the Court’s decision
The Secretariat • Carries out the day-to-day work of the Organization. • It services the other principal organs and carries out tasks as varied as the issues dealt with by the UN: administering peacekeeping operations, surveying economic and social trends, preparing studies on human rights, among others.
Trusteeship Council • Assigned to it the task of supervising the administration of Trust Territories placed under the Trusteeship System. • Five permanent members of the Security Council --China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and United States. • All Trust Territories have attained self-government or independence, either as separate States or by joining neighbouring independent countries.
