  1. Updates and Reminders Brian Miller Assistant Director for Research Division of Sponsored Research February 23, 2011

  2. Overview • NSF Requires Postdoctoral Researcher Mentoring Plans • NIH Requires Electronic Submission of SNAP Progress Reports • UF Express Proposal Page Replaces the UF Start Proposal Page • NIH Eliminates Submission Error Correction Window

  3. Overview cont. • NSF Issued a Revised Proposal and Award Policies & Procedures Guide • Inaugural Edition of the Export Controls @UF Newsletter

  4. Postdoctoral Research Mentoring Plans • NSF proposals that request funding to support postdoctoral researchers must include, as a supplementary document, a Postdoctoral Research Mentoring Plan, irrespective of whether the post-doc resides at the submitting organization, subawardee organization, or any organization participating in a simultaneously submitted collaborative project.

  5. Electronic SNAP Progress Report • NIH now requires SNAP progress reports be submitted electronically using the eRA Commons eSNAP module. • SNAP Progress reports will be due 45 days prior to the next budget start date instead of 60 days. • UF has delegated to the Principal Investigator the authority to submit eSNAPs directly to NIH.

  6. UF Express Proposal Page • Replaced UF Start Proposal Page • An easier way to enter proposals into the myUFL grants system, where you can take advantage of the internal electronic workflow system if your department and college use it.

  7. NIH Eliminates Error Correction Window • The 2-day “error correction window” to fix NIH system-identified errors or warnings after the submission deadline has been eliminated. • It is really important to make sure you now submit an application early so that you and your signing official have an opportunity to address any errors or warnings.

  8. NSF revised Proposal & Award P&P Guide • All proposals must describe data management and sharing plans of the products of research, or assert the absence of the need for such plans. • Voluntary committed cost sharing is prohibited. Org. resources necessary for the project must be non-quantifiably described in the Facilities, Equipment and Other Resources section of proposal.

  9. Export Controls @ UF Newsletter • Issued biannually and will address export controls as they pertain to the UF community. • The newsletter found at http://www.research.ufl.edu/research/pdf/Export_Controls_UF_November_December_2010.pdf.

  10. Additional information • Additional information concerning today’s topics as well as many other topics can be found at http://www.research.ufl.edu/research/ • Thank you.

  16. Finding Funding: Where to Look • Research Support website provides information on external funding sources • http://www.research.ufl.edu/researchsupport/external_funding.html • Searchable Databases • GrantsNet (www.grantsnet.org) • Chronicle of Philanthropy (http://philanthropy.com/deadlines/) • Community of Science (COS) • Funding Searches and Funding Email Alerts • To register: http://www.research.ufl.edu/researchsupport/external_funding.html and click on “register for free” (first bullet) • Create an Expertise Profile • Funding alerts based on info in PI’s COS Expertise Profile (or can set up specific searches, save them on workbench and have them emailed to you as funding alerts)

  17. Other information is optional: • Photo • Web page URL • Past positions • Expertise statement... • A sample profile • To be published, profiles must contain… • Contact information • An indication of your discipline or expertise.

  18. COS Funding Alert matches the mailing address and COS Keywords in your Expertise profile to new and updated opportunities on a weekly basis, creating your introductory COS Funding Alert search.

  19. The results of your Funding Alert search(es) are returned in a single e-mail each week.

  20. This is the full COS Funding Opportunities record returned from your COS Funding Alert.

  21. Advanced Search Advanced Search: Use this option for creating custom searches with a variety of search fields from which to choose.

  22. Searching the Databases Make a list of keywords before you begin to search Start with a broad term (“environment”) Limit with additional terms (“education”) Limit by country or region if relevant Search for the type of funding you need Remember: Non-scientist editors often compose the database entries Using a very specific keyword may not produce results

  23. Searching the Databases • Repeated negative results mean your search is probably too narrow • Review/Evaluate your “hits” – these are the sources that look the most promising • Good match between project and the funder? • Restrictions? (geographic; eligibility) • $$ amount available (+ or – what you need?) • Note deadline

  24. Advanced Search This search will look for records that contain the terms “art history” or “art appreciation” in any field, records with a deadline on or after 4/28/2010, and for which research conducted in Florida is eligible.

  25. Advanced Search Choosing the “explode” option will include all terms in the hierarchy underneath your keyword. Click the hyperlinked keyword name of the keyword to add it to your search. Browse the COS Keyword hierarchy or search for a specific term

  26. Advanced Search You can also select which requirements you meet, your citizenship, and the type of funding for which you’re looking.

  27. Advanced Search You can add and subtract search fields necessary to your search. You can also limit your search results by using the Exclusion Fields. You can filter out information in which you are not interested.

  28. Search Results This search returned 146 results.

  29. Search Results From your results list, you can see at a glance how they fall under various funding types (e.g. opportunities for “Training or Scholarship or Fellowship”). You can then click on any of these funding types to see opportunities with those criteria only.

  30. Save a Search The Save Search option will allow you to save searches that you have created to your COS Workbench.

  31. Save a Search You will be asked to choose a name for your search. You will also be asked if you would like to receive e-mail about this alert.

  32. You may have saved funding searches sent to you by a weekly email and the results can be shared.
