  2. Why it Matters… New Expectations since 2000 (Or your children’s world is different from the world of your childhood!) No Child Left Behind-NCLB California State Standards (among the most rigorous in the country) More covered each year and at earlier grades 8th Grade Algebra requirement (current 5th graders to get first test) Double math classes in middle school (NO EXPLORATORY!) California High School Exit Exam--CAHSEE “You can pay me now, or you can pay me later.” -(Not so) old Fram Oil Filter Commercial

  4. Mathematics in Children’s Literature There are literally hundreds of amazing, fun literature books that express fundamental math skills and stretch children’s knowledge.   5. Technology With Internet access and a good search engine, the possibilities are endless (and usually free!) Student Textbook links: most publishers for K-12 are now including internet help and extras—check the textbooks for web addresses Established Sites: Find these by running a search on Yahoo, Google, or other search engines.   6. The World Around Us There are so many ways to bring real life mathematics to your child’s world: MPG log Estimate weight of a bag of apples Checks drawn on Bank of Mom and Dad MAPS! Compute distance and time traveled Clocks—military/airline time, time zones Estimate the cost of a basket of groceries Compute the tip/tax Arts and crafts/building projects Music and Art lessons Cooking-recipe conversions/temperatures The man ignorant of mathematics will be increasingly limited in his grasp of the main forces of civilization. ~John Kemeny
