  1. Welcome to 4th Grade! • Please find your child’s seat • Please write a first day of school note to your child on the notecard at their desk!

  2. About Ms. Duty Personal • Central Washington Grad and soccer player • Family of educators • Professional • Elementary Education • Middle Level Mathematics Minor • Masters in Learning and Technology

  3. About Mrs. Johnson • Personal • University of California, San Diego undergraduate and Antioch University Seattle graduate school • Spent 9 years working for the National Park Service in Yosemite and Olympic NP • Got married this past August! • Professional • Bachelors in Biological Anthropology • Currently working towards a Masters in Teaching • Worked as a paraprofessional at IVE in the 16’-17’ school year for LRC and preschool

How You Can Help • Bring your students to school on time. • Provide a homework routine – a spot and time • Review and sign Friday Envelope- Due on Monday’s • To contact me with problems, questions, concerns, or compliments! • PTA – sign-up and check out the website • http://ivepta.org/ • Sign up to volunteer for copies, classroom parties, etc at the end of this presentation  • If you wish to volunteer, you will need to apply for a background check on the IVE school website. It is my hope that parents will become just as excited about fourth grade as their students!

  8. Homework • Our district and school are committed to having homework that is meaningful and manageable. Currently here is what you can expect: • Planners • Math – 3-4 nights a week • Reading – 30 minutes a night – at least! • Market Place Products

  9. Student Led Conferences • Kids get to see us partner together • We are all on the same page as far as learning goals • Any issues can get taken care of right there • We get to celebrate their progress right in front of them • Get kids communicating about their learning, empowering them Conference Dates: December 6th and 7th • Sign-ups will be through Skyward

Reading • Our literacy block is a balanced literacy program, writers workshop and Readers’ Workshop Reading Schedule Mini Lesson Read to self Reading response/journal entries Book talk/discussion Teacher: While kids work independently, I work with small groups and meet individually with students Materials: Leveled readers from our book room Chapter books for literature circles Independent books

  12. Reading Assessments this year: • All 4th and 5th graders will take a • Common Assessment in Reading • Fountas and Pinnell assessments will continue to be administered as needed to inform instruction and build skills.

  13. Writing • Writing Curriculum – Writing Workshop Approach • Opinion Writing – Personal and Persuasive Essays/Writing about Fiction • Information Writing – Bringing History to Life • Narrative Writing – Realistic Fiction • Grammar- Weekly word work

  15. Eureka Math – How Parents Can Help • Parent Tip Sheet to get an overview of the topics your child will be learning and how you can support this learning at home • Videos to support students when they are absent or need to review concepts taught in class

Social Studies • Field Testing:  • Elementary Social Studies is currently in the adoption process to ensure that materials are standard-aligned and modern in their approach. • Our class may be covering topics that differ from our peers.  • Our pacing of topics may be quicker, as field-testing concludes the end of February.  • Our input matters.  Our class will have a say in making sure social studies is standard-aligned, modern in its approach, and inclusive to all.   • Fourth Grade Social Studies: Fall • This fall our class will be focusing on the big idea of Washington Earliest Times in Social Studies.  • Washington Earliest Times: This inquiry focuses on Washington’s physical geography in general and on the relationship between Native American nations and their environments (pre-1700) in particular through the compelling question “Where and how did the earliest Washingtonians live?”

Technology • Keyboarding – Practice • Word, Power Point, publisher, imovie, QR codes computer programing, variety of apps • Internet as a research tool • Computer Lab – 45 minutes a week • I integrate technology into my teaching as much as possible Headphones- if you have not sent in a pair yet, please send them in when you can!
