  1. The Iranian revolution

  2. Groups involved • Before the Iranian revolution there were three pre-revolutionary opposition groups. Those three groups were the Constitutionalists, Marxists , and the Islamists.

  3. Economic injustice • Before the Iranian revolution the Iran was ruled by Shah Reza Pahlavi. • The first event that caused the Iranian revolution afterwards was because the gap between the rich and the poor grew due to the Shah’s economic policies which fueled dissent against his regime.

  4. Ayatollah RuhollahKhomeni • Ayatollah RuhollahKnomeni is a shia cleric living in exile in Paris. He promised the Iranian people social and economic reform and a return to traditional religious values which convinced many Iranians to side with him.

  5. Anti shah terrorist attacks As it got closer to 1970 the anti shah protesters are causing chaos all over the country by bombing cars and buildings crippling Iran’s economy.

  6. American interference • In order to keep the Shah in power, the CIA (central intelligence agency ) had to start a coup that overthrew prime minister Mohammed Mossadeq. With the Shah in charge , America and England can now make more easier deals on oil. America also gave 68 million dollars to Iran in emergency aid and 1.2 billion dollars over the next decade.

  7. Oil • A lot of western countries know that Iran is home to many oil reserves. But the problem is that most of Iran’s leaders like prime minister Mohammed Mossadeq dislike the west, therefore preventing western oil companies from coming in to make oil deals with Iran by staging a coup d'état , overthrowing Mossadeq, and turning the Shah into an absolute Monarch making it easier for western countries to make oil deals.

  8. Return of Khomeini • When Khomeini returned from exile it caused violence to erupt all over. Political and social instability increased. Street battles raged in towns and provinces between pro-Khomeini demonstrators and police.

  9. Revolution! The US and the Shah are organizing another coup d'état to overthrow the Khomeini but the military happened to not have an appetite for seizing power causing the Shah’s regime to collapse.

  10. Different points of view • From the Shah’s point of view changing laws for women to be able to vote and changing laws so that western companies can make oil deals is a good thing for the country because the country can get richer and people can also have more rights. • From the point of view of the revolutionaries, the revolutionaries say that the Shah is violating ancient rules and that women should not be allowed to vote, and that western interference brings corruption and many bad things into the country.
