Referencing. What you need to know to write a great bibliography. Why do we need to reference?. The answer to this question is very simply; to ensure you do not plagiarise. Plagiarism is when someone copies work published or created by someone else. It’s stealing! Let’s break this down;

  1. Referencing What you need to know to write a great bibliography.

  2. Why do we need to reference? • The answer to this question is very simply; to ensure you do not plagiarise. • Plagiarism is when someone copies work published or created by someone else. It’s stealing! • Let’s break this down; • If you read a book on ‘Planets’ researched and written by a man called ‘Alex Pluto’ and you find a piece of information that is relevant to the assignment in science you are to complete , you copy word-for-word a paragraph of information without reference to ‘Alex Pluto’ ( the original author) you have therefore plagiarised!

Referencing; • You can reference in many ways. • One referencing technique you may have heard of regularly is writing a Bibliography. • Bibliography is a list of sources you have used, which includes, textbooks, non-fiction books, articles and websites. • Note: Google is not a reference as it is not the source that gave you the information it was the search engine that helped you get to the information on the website pages. (Also, listing yourself as reference is not adequate as you are not an expert in the field nor have you legitimately published the information you are using).

Note taking and Paraphrasing; • Paraphrasing can be simple; • The following instructions will show you just how easy it is. • Read the information.Highlight ( underline or note) the key points of the paragraph. • Write a paragraph in your own words using the key information highlighted. • Got it? Now, apply it to the information on the next page.

Bibliography. • You must have a bibliography to highlight where you got your information from for your assessment tasks. • A bibliography is a list of resources you used to help you complete your task. • You need to take note of ; • Title of the resource (i.e book title) • Author (s) • Year the source was published • Where is was published • The name of the publisher • Pages of the book you used. • These facts need to be used for each resource used and listed in your bibliography.
