  3. Type II/III cables – Installation • 3594 cables installed and tested (July 18) • - All 2112 barrel cables (sectors 1,3,7,9,11,15) • - Endcap cables for sectors 1,3,7,9 • Installation of last 494 Endcap (sector 11&15) resumed last week • Sector 15 (247 EC cables) almost completed and tested • Sector 11 (247 EC cables) will follow • 70% of the cables fixed on cable trays and positioned (plugged) in PP3 • Cables are tested in synch with installation • Yield: <1% cables with defects or to replace • Mechanical defects • Damage during installation or preparation • Failed electrical test (most probably due to splice damage) after installation (replaced) • Additional inspection and final verification • Fix wires that have been damaged during subsequent installation of other systems • Fix wires that have been damaged when segmented plates were removed • Temporary protective plates (fiber glass/G10) were fabricated to protect cables during Barrel insertion (and to not violate envelope) - to be replaced with temporary plates coming from RAL • Screws (used for protective plates) to be verified (non-magnetic) • A couple of shorts to cryostat (probably due to PP3 or metal debris) to be resolved on side A when accessible • Check for possible contact of clamp/base-plates to other metal parts present in the cryostat (isolate them) especially in the EC area • Cleaning of dry nitrogen pipes (from rack) in progress A.Ciocio -SCTSG

  4. Type IV Cables • Installation • US side: Type IV cables (2044+spares) going from PP3 racks in the ATLAS cavern to PS racks in US15 • Installed • With connectors • 9 PS racks (8 for barrel) installed and cables plugged in • USA side: Type IV from PP3 to USA15 installation completed (end of July) • All type IV were connected to PP3 (17 racks in UX15) • Need to install a few more spare cables • Connector in situ (CPE) • All connectors (2100+) in US15 completed in March • 2+1 CPE techs returned in mid-April for a few weeks • Rework of faulty connectors in US side • Started 2 USA racks but left again because more USA15 racks were needed to be completed for the full team to operate efficiently • 4 CPE techs returned on August 1st • Very slow startup - problems with the Company • 5 barrel (or mixed) racks in USA15 are completed as of today • 2 racks this week (probably only one) • The 7th 8th USA racks with Barrel cables will be completed during PS installation • all barrel cables will be at least cut to length before PS installation • The last 3 racks (EC) by Mid-October • Testing • All cables are tested as they are plugged in row by row during PS connection • All cables are tested 100 at a time as connectors are made • Test of whole chain was performed on the US side (80 %) in end-July/August • PS installation in USA15: Starting the week of Sept18 - first plug-in Sept 25 A.Ciocio -SCTSG

  6. PP3 • Assembly and Installation was completed in July • All type IV were plugged in + type III barrel cable (and EC) of sector 1, 3, 9 (US side) • Test of whole chain was almost completed (US side) • Since first installation (January) of PP3 many problems were found and repairs implemented • Insulation between units • Sliding units in subracks • Failed units (2+) • Shorts to the top hat outer shell • During test of whole chain new shorts appeared suggesting that the insulation of the units near the corners of the subracks is not strong enough to resist wearing or puncturing from any metallic dust and it can be damaged by just plugging in more cables Therefore: • All subracks in the 17 racks will be dismounted • PP3 subracks containing 30 units will be disassembled, cleaned, re-insulated, glued properly and plastic layers (0.25 mm polyester) will be inserted between all PP3s • Scott Moncrieff and Ashley French are back since last week for the whole month (no more) to do this rework • Disconnection of all cables has started for several racks (by the SCT cabling/testing team) • Rework has started but more material is still awaiting to arrive from Australia (new/larger outer shells, etc.) A.Ciocio -SCTSG

  7. PP3 rework plan Sector 15 Sector 1 Sector 3 Sector 9 Sector 11 Sector 7 A.Ciocio -SCTSG

  9. Schedule • Type II-III installation and testing September 25th • last Endcap Sector 11&15 • 494 cables • Type IV installation (spares) end-September • All Connector in situ + testing mid/end-October • PS crates (Barrel USA15) mid-October • PP3 rework end-September • All cables re-plugged into PP3 mid/end-October • Test of whole chain (Barrel) end-October A.Ciocio -SCTSG

  10. Manpower • PP3 rework is in progress • Need (crucial!) • 3 additional techs until the end of September • 2 techs to help connecting • 1 person (student OK) to help with the rework in the lab • Need • 3 additional techs the first 3 weeks of October • To help connecting • Testing • Delay of connector in situ will involve more flexibility and additional adjustment of the schedule for • Re-connecting cables and testingthe whole chain • More help needed in October A.Ciocio -SCTSG
