Dominance Of Medieval Life • The Church was the center of the social life - It was a place of worship and often the biggest public building in a village • Daily life went around the Christian calendar. - This went around holidays like Easter and dedicated saint days. • Church required tithe, or tax to be paid by Christians

  3. Roles of the Church • Baptism • Confirmation • Marriages • Holy Order • Penance • Confessions

  4. Art and Architecture • Most art was religious • Art was substitute for literature • Most people were illiterate • Churches built in Gothic Style • Gothic style included long, tall structures

  5. Benedictine Rule • Benedict changed monk system • Three rules were: Obedience, Stability, Conversion • Monasteries like Manors

  6. Rise of Cathedrals • Mass and administered sacraments took place in these Cathedrals • These larger buildings were called cathedrals • These cathedrals were built in Gothic Style.

  7. Rise/Spread of Cathedrals • By 1100’s bishops managed larger churches -these larger churches are called Cathedrals • Cathedrals spread across the world -started spreading through Europe first

  8. Women in the Eyes of the Church • Women and men were equal beforegod • It was decided that women needed men -Men saw women as weak and gullible • Women were punished more harshly than men -Whipped or prison

  9. Priest -Performed sacred rites • Bishop -Confirmed • Monk -Worked and prayed People Of The Church
