VISION Who We Can Be Maumelle High School
Today’s Questions…. • What is the future job market? • What motivates today’s teen-agers to learn? • How do we re-design the high school experience for “information age” students?
Industrial Age vs Information age We learned…just in case we might need it They learn AS they need it…IF they deem it valuable We retained a body of knowledge They retain WHEN applicable We learned facts They learn PROCESSES We used textbooks They use TEXTING
So…high schools must provide… • Education that prepares students for CAREERS….(college and career ready) • “Real world” working environment • Problem-solving and critical thinking • Invisible and continual use of technology • Continual collaboration with “co-workers” • Independent learning • Opportunities for students to be employable upon graduation
What We Need • Motivated Students • Engaging Practices • Relevant Studies • Small Learning Communities • Developed MHS Culture And….
Researched Based Model • To ensure changes are productive • To use as a measuring tool • To network with other schools like us • To receive valuable feedback
We Need… A plan that facilitates meeting multiple needs in one package: School Climate Relationships High Expectations 21st Century Instruction
PROPOSALA Redesigned MMHS • Wall to Wall Career Academies • Certifications for Employment • Concurrent Credit (National Coalition Career Academies) • Aligned to Ten Key Practices of Top High Schools in the Nation (SREB High Schools That Work) • Project Based Instruction
What is a CAREER ACADEMY • Small high school within a large high school…ideally no more than 500 (Grades 9 – 12) • Career Focus • Core/Career Teacher Teams • Business Partner • Collegiate Partner • Certifications offered
Benefits of Career Academy • Students see purpose in high school experience • Small Group of core/career teachers share same students • Enrichment activities that are cross curricular
