  1. Summary of Hebrews • Chapter 10 • Presented by: John Hanes

  2. Commentary on Hebrews 10:1 • Earthly tabernacle was a copy (a model) and shadow of the real tabernacle in Heaven. • It was inferior to the real thing. • New Covenant is SUPERIOR to the Old Covenant, not just newer.

  3. Burnt Offering

  4. Brazen Altar in Courtyard of Tabernacle

  5. Commentary on Hebrews 10:4 Lev 4:19-20 (Sin offering for people) ““The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar … He must remove all of the fat from the bull. He must burn it on the altar.… When he does, he will pay for the sin of the people. And they will be forgiven.” Lev 4:28, 31 (Sin offering for priest) they must bring as their offering for the sin they committed a female goat … Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. They shall remove all the fat, … and the priest shall burn it on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.

  6. Commentary on Hebrews 10:5-9 1 Sam 15:22 But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. Hosea 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

  7. Commentary on Hebrews 10:9-14 • The Old Covenant (the law and its rules), and the religion of Judaism are now obsolete & outdated. • The system of forgiveness under the law no longer works. • The system of forgiveness under the OT never did what it was supposed to do. • There was limited access to God under the Old Covenant. • God allowed the temple to be destroyed to illustrate that Judaism and its rules was over.

  8. Commentary on Hebrews 10:15-17 • Old Covenant was rules based • New Covenant is based on grace and a personal relationship with God • If God’s focus is no longer the set of rules, then perhaps we should stop emphasizing the rules • God wants us to love Him with our Hearts and with our Minds

  9. Commentary on Hebrews 10:18 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

  10. Model of Holy Place & Most Holy Place

  11. Commentary on Hebrews 10:19-22 The Holy Place represents the Old Covenant The Most Holy Place (where God’s presence was) represents the New Covenant Only the curtain, like a wall of sin, separated them … Matt 27:50-51a “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Mk 15:37-38 “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Lk 23:44-46 “It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.”

  13. Commentary on Hebrews 10:19-22 Ex 19:10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.” Lev 16:2 The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.”

  14. Commentary on Hebrews 10:19-22 2 Sam 6:3-7 “They set the ark of God on a new cart … Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it … Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.” Ex 25:14-15 “Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it. The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed.”

  15. Ark with atonement cover (a/k/a mercy seat)

  16. Commentary on Hebrews 10:26-31 Exodus 20:20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

  17. Commentary on Hebrews 10:26-31 Rev 14:17-20 (NASB) And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. Then another angel, the one who has power over fire, came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe.” So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God. And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.
