  2. Hebrews 10:19-39 • Exhortation: Stay the Course (19-25). • a. Why: The Work of Christ (19-21). • b. How: Faith, Hope, and Love (22-25). • II. Warning: Sin Has Major Consequences (26-39).

  3. Hebrews 10:19-39 • Options: • -Believers who lose their salvation. • BUT see Romans 8:33-39; John 10:27-29 • -False “Christians” in the church. • BUT look closely at the context (vv. 19, 30, 32). • -True Christians warned of a hypothetical situation. • BUT such warnings carry no weight!

  4. Hebrews 10:19-39 • So what is going on? • -True Christians. • -Real consequences • -Not loss of salvation, but other severe consequences.

  5. Hebrews 10:19-39 • What are the consequences? • -OT background: “high-handed” sin (Numbers 15:30-31).

  6. Hebrews 10:19-39 • But the person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or an alien, that one is blaspheming the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. Because he has despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his guilt will be on him. • Numbers 15:30-31

Hebrews 10:19-39 • What are the consequences? • -OT background: “high-handed” sin (Numbers 15:30-31). • -NT: Sin can lead to death (1 Cor 11:30; Acts 5:1-11). • -Consequences worse than death: Loss of fellowship with God (Heb 6:1-8); loss of community; loss of eternal reward at Christ’s judgment seat.

  8. Hebrews 10:19-39 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 2 Corinthians 5:10

  9. Hebrews 10:19-39 • Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.

  10. Hebrews 10:19-39 • If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. • 1 Corinthians 3:12-15
