Summary Peter Larsen ALA Annual Meeting
Academic • Standard but not universal set of duties • Not much difference between public and private universities • A sense of importance of the work • Confusion over what the work should be
Public • More narrow range of core duties than in academic libraries • Users slightly more neutral • Otherwise, a fairly similar picture • A sense of importance of the work • Confusion over what the work should be
Dartmouth • Developing liaison skills and practices • Retaining those skills and practices in institutional memory • Creating and maintaining a “two way street” between the library and user groups
What Does It All Mean? • Everyone has an idea of what a liaison is • There’s no agreement on what a liaison does • There’s even less agreement on how to do it • The result is confusion and anxiety
Where Next? There needs to be a lot more work answering the questions • What should a liaison do? • How should they do it? This will vary from institution to institution, but development and reporting of best practices is a starting point for discussion and development of new standards and guidelines.
