  2. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool JST is proud to introduce the JST Mini Reel hand tool and explain the features, benefits and basic operation. Welcome to the JST Mini Reel hand tool training module. In this module we will review the features, benefits and basic operation of this hand tool.

  3. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Engineers, Manufacturing, Lab Technicians and MRO confronted with limited production needs looking for an easier more user friendly way to terminate crimp contacts. Crimp contacts are generally packaged on large reels for use with semi automatic and automatic termination equipment or in loose piece for use with hand tools. Reels for use with semi automatic and automatic equipment typically contain thousands of crimp contacts while loose piece crimp contacts for use with a hand tool are difficult to handle, particularly for high density connectors that are on centerline (pitch) spacing of less than 1.5mm.

  4. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Provides crimp contacts pre-packaged on mini reels for use with a hand tool with an integral reel frame adapter.

  5. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation • Remove the tool from its protective case and mount the reel of contacts on the reel holder. • Ensure the reel is centered on the spindle and that the contacts have unhindered access into the guide track. The axial position can be adjusted by loosening the nut on the spindle and turning the shaft in or out until the desired position is achieved.

  6. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation • Insert the end of the contact strip into the guide track. With the contact strip inserted about 2” into the feed track, push the yellow feed lever forward until the feed finger engages with the feed holes in the contact strip. Continue pushing the lever until the first contact is positioned over the crimping anvil.

  7. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation • The crimp height of the contact is controlled by the insertion of the appropriate shim into the rear face of the hand tool. The shims are marked for the applicable wire size and are stored on the side of the hand tool. Remove the applicable shim from the side of the hand tool by unscrewing the knurled retaining screw and insert into the rear of the tool pushing firmly until the shim is properly located.

  8. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation • Insert a stripped wire into the upper die of the hand tool and locate the end of the stripped wire against the wire locator between the two crimping punches.

  9. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation • Squeeze the handles together while ensuring the wire remains in the correct position relative to the crimp dies. Continue to squeeze the handles together until the handles are fully closed and the ratchet releases the handles to open fully.

  10. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation • Advance the next contact over the crimping anvil by pushing the yellow feed lever in a right hand direction towards the side of the tool. • The strip of contacts can be removed from the tool at any time by pushing the red lever on the back of the hand tool in an upward, counter-clockwise direction. This disengages the feed finger from the contact strip and allows the strip to be removed from the tool.

  11. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation BENEFITS: • Mini Reels are preloaded with up to 1,000 contacts in strip form per reel depending on contact size. • Mini Reel hand tool is ergonomically designed for comfort and ease of use. • Mini Reel tool is lightweight and offers the user total portability and flexibility. • Mini Reel tool provides the same crimp reliability and consistency found in semi-automatic and automatic termination equipment.

  12. JST Mini Reel Hand Tool Operation SUMMARY: JST has developed a Mini Reel hand tool to provide the user with limited production requirements without the financial investment in semi automatic equipment while still offering the user the crimp reliability in addition to total flexibility.
