  5. We Collect and Managethe Region’s Blood Supply • KBC supplies all of the blood for 67 hospitals and clinics in Central and Eastern Kentucky. • KBC exists thanks to donors 62 counties.

  6. Donation to Transfusion Process • Donor recruitment • Donation • Testing • Processing • Packaging • Distribution • Transfusion

  7. Today’s Reality: Collecting enough blood for the region’s needs is a constant challenge.

  8. Here’s Why DEMAND FOR BLOOD PRODUCTS • Transfusion of blood components is steadily increasing. • Blood donations aren’t keeping pace.

  9. Why Is Demand Up? • Medical miracles, complex surgeries and procedures require a lot of blood. • 76 million aging Baby Boomers will need a lot of it in years to come.

  10. Donor Response 400 healthy people must donate daily to meet central and eastern Kentucky’s blood transfusion needs. BUT, NOT ENOUGH DO!

  11. Who’s Donating? • Kentucky has 4 million residents. • About 39% are eligible to donate. (age, health limits) • But only 5% do! • That’s just 2 out of 100 people!!

  12. SOMEONE IS COUNTING ON BLOOD DONORS EVERY DAY

  13. Tanya Ford, London, KY Difficult child birth - 28 pints of blood

  14. Amelia Brown, Lexington, KYLiver Transplant - 49 pints of blood.

  15. Madison Hines, Lexington, KY Leukemia Survivor – multiple transfusion She doesn’t like needles either.

  16. Lauren Adams, 17, Lexington, KY New donor

  17. Donor Requirements • Must be at least 17-years-old • 16-year-olds can give with parental consent • Must weigh at least 110 pounds. • Must be in general good health. • Must be willing to save a life!

  18. DonationProcess • Appointment • All donors are asked to schedule an appointment to donate blood by making an appointment to donate either on our website (www.kybloodcenter.org) or by calling 1.800.775.2522.

  19. DonationProcess 2. Registration When you arrive at the Blood Center or mobile drive, you'll register by presenting a picture identification such as driver's license, student ID card or other government identification card. You will also be asked to provide just the last four digits of your social security number.

  20. DonationProcess 3. Medical Screening You'll then go to a private screening area where you will review questions about your medical history and behavior that could put you at risk for various diseases. Then we will perform a "mini-physical" that checks your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and the iron level in your blood (hemoglobin test).

  21. DonationProcess 4. Donation After your medical screening, you'll recline in a donor bed. A phlebotomist (the person who draws your blood) will clean your arm and insert a needle into a vein allowing the collection of about one pint of blood into a sterile, plastic pouch. Does it hurt? Donors say it feels like a firm pinch on the inner bend of your arm.

  22. DonationProcess 5. Refreshments After the needle is removed and a bandage is placed on your arm, we ask you to rest for a few minutes. Refreshments are available in the donor cafe area to supply quick energy.

  23. Different Ways to Give • Whole Blood • Double Red Cell Donation • Platelet Pheresis • Plasma Pheresis

  24. PLATELET DONATION When donating platelets, blood is drawn from the donor's arm and circulated through a cell separator machine. The machine separates the platelets and returns the remaining blood components to the donor. This procedure takes between an hour and an hour and a half, with your entire visit to the donor center taking about two hours.

  25. PLASMA DONATION Plasma donation is much the same as donating platelets. Blood is drawn from a donor's arm and circulated through a cell separator machine. The machine quickly separates whole blood into plasma and your red cells are returned to you. The entire donation process takes about one hour from registration to refreshments. Only males can donate plasma and Type AB is preferred.

  26. DOUBLE RED CELL DONATION Red cells make up more than 60% of all transfusions. The red cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body and are usually used following trauma or surgery. Donated red blood cells can be kept for 42 days. Because the interval between double red cell donations is 112 days compared to 56 days for a regular blood donation, you are spending less time donating but are giving twice as much!

  27. Blood Drives Needed Even if you are unable to donate blood you can be a hero by helping the Kentucky Blood Center! Host or organize a blood drive!

  28. Celebrating 40 Years! Give blood between July 21st and Sept. 21st and you will be eligible to win a 2009 Toyota Camry! Must be 18 to win.
