  • There IS a New Testament church.
  • It CAN be identified.

Are these assumptions valid?

There IS A New Testament Church

Matthew 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Acts 5:11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Acts 8:1-3 Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

1 Timothy 3:15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth

As the Head exists, so does the body. You cannot deny the body any more than the Head.

Ephesians 1:22-23 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 2:16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

Ephesians 5:22-32

Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Colossians 1:24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church,

The New Testament Church IS Identifiable

Christ, the Head, is identifiable. So is the body.

He is distinguished from those of similar rank.

  • 1 Timothy 6:14-16 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Christ, the Head, is identifiable. So is the body.

The apostles cited certain signs that would reveal Him.

  • Acts 17:2-3 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.”

Christ, the Head, is identifiable. So is the body.

The people of Jesus’ day knew there were specific points of identification.

  • Matthew 2:1-6
  • John 7:40-43

Christ, the Head, is identifiable. So is the body.

Jesus warned against being deceived by false Christs

  • Matthew 24:23-24 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
  • Therefore they could know the real one.

The New Testament Church IS Identifiable

The New Testament church is specifically separated from Jews and Gentiles.

1 Corinthians 10:32 Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God,

Are there attributes common to the Jews, the Jewish religion?

Romans 3:2 Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God.

1 Corinthians 9:20 and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law;

Philippians 3:1-11

Are there attributes common to the Gentiles?

1 Corinthians 9:21-22 to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law;

As the Jew and Gentile are distinguishable, so is the church.

The New Testament church can be distinguished by its doctrines.

The Holy Spirit used doctrines of religious sects to distinguish them from one another.

  • Matthew 22:23-34
    • The Sadducees were silenced by Jesus’ refutation of their doctrine.
    • The Pharisees were not
    • Paul used their differences to his advantage, Acts 23:1-10

  • Acts 17:18-19 Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” thers said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?

  • The Head can be distinguished, so can the body.
  • The church is distinct from other groups of people.
  • Its doctrines distinguish it from other religious groups, including Catholic and protestant denominations.

1 Peter 4:11 If anyone speaks, let himspeak as the oracles of God. …

Acts 4:2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 13:44-46 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

Acts 19:23-26 And about that time there arose a great commotion about the Way. 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no small profit to the craftsmen. 25 He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: “Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade. 26 Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands.

Should they have stopped identifying Christ as the only Savior?

Acts 4:17-20 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.” 18 So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

Acts 5:29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.

Should they have stopped identifying Christ as the only Savior?

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The apostles showed that though there are many gods and lords, there is only one God the Father and one Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 8:5-6 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one … Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Likewise, Paul taught there is but one body.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body.

Ephesians 4:4 There is one body

  • As we may compare false gods and false lords with the one God and one Lord, we may show churches of men do not fit the description of the Lord’s church.
  • Not only may we, we MUST!
    • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
    • Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
    • 2 Peter 3:16-17
