  1. Hamlet ACT III

  2. Act III scene i • Claudius and court trying to solve problems presented by Hamlet’s behavior. • Claudius’s aside : “How smart a lash that speech doth give my conscience.” • “To be or not to be…” highest and abstract questions. Contemplating suicide? Ultimate morality of revenge? • If life is fleeting and insignificant, how can any human actions be worth caring about?

  3. Hamlets conversation with Ophelia verges on cruelty. • Claims that all women are promiscuous and tells her he no longer loves her. Wants to end marriage as an institution • Polonius and Claudius have been spying on the couple and feel as though Hamlet is going to mad. He will be sent to England.

  4. Scene ii • Watching the play and the king is startled • Calls for light and there is an end to the show • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern arrive and tell him that the king is not well and Gertrude would like to see him.

  5. Scene iii • Polonius plans to hide behind a tapestry • Claudius kneels and prays and Hamlet sees this as a time to gain revenge but does not want him to gain salvation since old Hamlet was taken away without a chance to atone. • Does he truly want this man to go to hell or is it another example of his inability to commit murder?

  6. Scene iv • Hamlet is in his mother’s chamber and hears Polonius (he believes it to be Claudius) and kills him. • They virtually ignore the body as he complains about her marriage and berates her. • The ghost reappears to affirm his goal, Gertrude cannot see the ghost (then why could Horatio and the guards see it in Act 1?) • She appears to be remorseful for her actions although she may just be catering to her antic son.
