  3. What is Rhetoric? • The art of using language effectively or persuasively. • Can you write and speak in a way that causes people to pay attention and actually listen to what you have to say?

  4. Who are Good Rhetors? Rhetors = “good” speakers

  5. Why is Rhetoric Important? • Do you communicate? • Do you want to be listened to? • Do you want to get what you want? • How effective are you NOW at the above?

  6. 1) Ethos (Ethics) • Synonym = Credibility • Persuasion based upon the credibility of the speaker • Speaker (or author) wants us to believe him because he is worthy of respect.

  7. What is Credibility? • Believability! • Why do we listen to some people and not others? • Teachers • Presidential candidates • Commercials

  8. How Can You Gain Credibility? • Know your topic / Be an expert! • Have experience • Follow-through on promises • Be honest

  9. How do speakers / authors gain credibility? • He/she is an authority on the subject • He/she is likeable • He/she shares our values • He/she has a good reputation

  10. 2) Logos (Logic) • Synonym = Logical, rational • Persuading through the use of reasoning • Appealing to the brain • Using specific details, examples, facts, data, or expert testimony

  11. Examples of Logic • Is it cheaper? • Is it faster? • Is it smaller? • Is it more efficient?

  12. 3) Pathos (Emotions) • Synonym = Emotion • Persuading through the use of emotional appeals • Appeals to the heart • Include vivid, concrete descriptions and figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification, etc …)

  13. Examples of Emotion • What emotions drive people? • How will you “feel? • Is fear more powerful than love?

A Bit about Medium • Anything the writer does, any device the writer uses • Rhetorical strategies = device designed to have impact on a given audience • Example….metaphor = description = literary device • Example….the impact the metaphor has on the audience = rhetorical strategy • How the message was delivered impacts our understanding of the message, audience, and speaker

  18. A Bit about Audience • The group the speaker has in mind that he will speaking to (sometimes called the intended audience) • How does this impact the persona he adopts? • What strategies does he employ? • What is his message?
