  3. Novel Feature • Collaboration with the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) • Fall: Module on Industrial Design • Spring: Collaboration between MU engineering and MIAD industrial design students (BME projects) • Virtual teams – Smith College

Best Practices • ID Module • Aesthetics of Design, Industrial Design • Communicating Your Ideas • Converting Specs into Concepts • Mock-ups and Prototypes • Shared project resources • MIAD: machine shop (foam, clay, wood, vacuum forming, etc.) • MU: machine shop, 3D printer • Ex: Nourish Project

Outcomes • Aestheticaly pleasing, functional prototypes • Mutual respect for each other’s disciplines • Engineers: functionality, validation/verification, documentation, analysis/presentation of data • ID: communicate through sketching, focus on user experience • Both: customer needs, usability, manufacturing, prototypes • Different ways to view/solve problems • Cross-functional language; prepared to work with each other on multidisciplinary teams
