What does "Iditarod" mean?

* ”Clear Water”-named by the Shageluk Indians for the Iditarod River.

*”Haiditarod”-named by the Ingalik Indians for the river on which the town was built.

* “hidedhod”- from the Ingalik and Holikachuk Indians for the Iditarod River.

History of the Iditarod

* Named in honor of the 1925 serum-run from Nenana to Nome

* Founded by Dorothy Page and Joe Redington, Sr., in 1967.

*First race had 34 mushers and a $50,000 purse.

*This year’s race has 100 mushers and a $300,000 purse.
