What Is Cubism? • Cubist art depicts an object from all possible perspectives • All points of view, instead of just one, are portrayed in one image • The style was invented by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, but it was the French critic Louis Vauxcelles who coined the term“cubism” • The two main branches are analytic and synthetic

  3. Analytic vs. Synthetic • Analytic: • Objects were analyzed and broken into simple geometric shapes • Lack of color (only a plain monochromatic scale was used) • Artists focused on forms to represent the natural world • Synthetic: • Introduced color, texture, and surfaces to cubism • First mainstream of art to utilize collages • While analytical cubism was about “pulling things apart,” synthetic cubism was about “putting things together”

  8. Picasso’s Legacy • Picasso is by far the most renowned Cubist artist • He was Spanish, but spent most of his life in France • Much of his art depicted either the Spanish Civil War, nude women, or his emotions
