  1. Beware Of The Dogs! Text: Phil. 3:1-3 Scripture Reading: Mt. 7:15-20

  2. Intro Many things in life require warning; signs, ads, labels, etc. all warn against certain things/practices Phil. 3:1-3 1. Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you. 2. Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision; 3. for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, Beware Of The Dogs!

  3. Intro • Warning given in strong language (Phil. 3:2) • No stronger than John the Baptist – Mt. 3:7 • No stronger than Jesus – Mt. 23:33 Mt. 3:7 7. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Mt. 23:33 33. "You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell? Sometimes in giving warnings, strong language is used to convey the danger! There is a danger when God says, “Beware of the Dogs!” Beware Of The Dogs!

  4. Rejoice In the Lord Phil. 3:1 1. Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you. Is it difficult to rejoice when things go well for us? No, when things go our way it is easy to rejoice and celebrate! Is it difficult to rejoice when things don’t go well for us? Not impossible, but not often the first emotion! • Paul penned this letter from prison – Phil. 1:12-14! (Heb. 10:34; 12:2) • If we can have joy in the good times, we can also find joy in the dark times if our joy is in Christ (Job 2:10). Job 2:10 10. But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Beware Of The Dogs!

  5. Rejoice In the Lord • True source of joy is “In Christ Jesus” – Phil. 3:3 • (Gal. 3:27: Baptized into Christ) • Real source for joy is in the right relationship with Christ. • “In Him” we are: • God’s chosen children – Eph. 1:3-5 • Redeemed from sin – Eph. 1:7 Those who “rejoice in the Lord” can do so in prosperity and adversity! Beware Of The Dogs!

  6. Beware of the Dogs Phil. 3:2 2. Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision; • “Beware of the Dogs!” • Warning signs that say, “Beware of dog” – people understand what that means! • The Jews considered Gentiles as dogs. • But it is not Gentiles Paul is warning of here! • False teachers are identified as “dogs” in this passage • Jesus identified false teachers as “wolves” • (Mt. 7:15-20). • To be warned of them, means they are dangerous! Beware Of The Dogs!

  7. Beware of the Dogs • “Beware of the evil workers” • Those who teach falsely, work evil, are those who pervert the gospel – Gal. 1:6-9 • False teachers “upset” and cause “shipwreck” of people’s faith – • I Tim. 1:19-20; II Tim. 2:16-18 • False teachers (those who no longer abide in the doctrine of Christ), commit “evil deeds” and so do those who condone them – II Jn. 9-11 • False teachers can be identified by “their fruits” – Mt. 7:15-20 Mt. 7:15-20 15. "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16. "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17. "So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18. "A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19. "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20. "So then, you will know them by their fruits. Beware Of The Dogs!

  8. Beware of the Dogs • “Beware of the false circumcision” • “Mutilate the flesh” (ESV); “Concision” (KJV), “Mutilation” (NKJV) • Katatome[kat-at-om-ay'] (G2699): “to cut, cutting down, cutting off, mutilation; concision.” • These groups of false teachers are those that seek to bind the Old Law on believers. • They misunderstand the covenant of circumcision and focus only on the useless physical act of cutting, thus the word that means “to cut.” • Even in the O.T. more than physical circumcision was required! (Lev. 26:41; Deut. 10:16; 30:6) – (If not of the heart, just a mutilation!) Deut. 10:16 16. "So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer. • True circumcision is that of the heart – Rom. 2:28-29 To “Beware of the dogs” is to see them as dangerous and avoid such false teachers! Beware Of The Dogs!

  9. True Christian Joy (Phil. 3:3) Phil. 3:3 3. for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, • Worship God in the Spirit of God (Jn. 4:24) • Those who are circumcised in heart (Rom. 28-29) worship God in the Spirit and have no confidence in the flesh! • The true inner meaning of circumcision is one that glories in Christ, not on the human effort (“to cut”). • “Worship” is latreuo [lat-ryoo'-o] (G3000): “to minister (to God), i.e. render, religious homage: serve, do the service, worship, worshipper.” • The word denotes “faithful service” to God – there is joy in “worship” to God! Beware Of The Dogs!

  10. True Christian Joy (Phil. 3:3) • “Rejoice in Christ Jesus” • Is it a joy to serve Him? • One cannot trust in the Lord and trust in the flesh (false circumcision) – • II Cor. 5:7 II Cor. 5:7 7. for we walk by faith, not by sight-- The joy of the Christian is Christ and what He has accomplished for us! It was a joy to Him to bring us close to God! (Heb. 12:2; Eph. 2:13) Beware Of The Dogs!

  11. Conclusion • Christians have every reason to rejoice! • Brought near to God (Eph. 2:13) • Redeemed from sin (Eph. 1:7) • Promised a reward in Heaven (I Pet. 1:4) • But there are those who are “Robbers of joy” (“Dogs”) • false teachers that pervert the gospel • By perverting it and causing others to believe it, they steal away the true source of joy! • When people trust in the flesh (that which is not of God), there is no hope! There are sorrows and hurts in this life, and there are good times as well Beware Of The Dogs!

  12. Conclusion • When we learn to rejoice “in Christ” we: • Have courage to face life; accepting the good with the bad (Job. 2:10) • Have strength to endure suffering (Heb. 10:32-39) What is the source of your joy? (Temporal or Eternal?) Rejoice in Christ; and “Beware of the Dogs” who try to steal away the source of joy! Beware Of The Dogs!

  13. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
