On this World Diabetes Day, let’s break a few myths for people with diabetes who feel threatened

under the misconception of following a strict diet.

A diabetic’s food has to be different from the rest of the family.

NO! If you are a diabetic – you can still eat the same food as the rest of your family, and also indulge

in those special delights once a while. Because of the current nutrition guidelines, even as a diabetic

you need a healthy diet consisting of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, heart-healthy fats, and lean

protein foods. However, it is the portion size you have to take care of. Eat these in moderation.

Starchy food can spike your blood glucose level and make you gain weight.

Is a total myth because starchy foods – such as cereal, white bread, rice and pasta, fruits, yogurt, milk

and some desserts provide carbohydrates, which is the energy source for the body. And whether or

not a diabetic, everyone needs a bit of carbohydrates in their regular diet. Choosing the right groups

of carbs in your diet that contain whole grains and high fiber is the wise choice to keep your blood

glucose levels in a safe parameter. Again, portion size is the key.

It’s not safe for a diabetic to eat sugar.

Not true! Every cell in our body lives on glucose as it is the energy source of life, and our body

transforms all the food we consume to glucose for fuel. Just because a diabetic’s body does not get

along well with high levels of sugar they

along well with high levels of sugar, they don’t have to completely bar sugar in any way. Sugar is not

banned in any way for a diabetic in modern diabetes meal planning and also depending on the

medication prescribed to them.

Fats have a high impact on blood glucose levels.

Fat in certain foods does not directly spike your blood glucose level. As long as you limit the intake of

trans fat and saturated fat in your diet, you are safe and out of the cardiovascular or heart diseases

range!

The main cause for diabetes is obesity.

This is partly true, because excess weight can activate diabetes, but there is a lot more to diabetes

than just weight alone. Diabetes is deep rooted with genes and so is obesity and to enroot diabetes,

one has to be genetically predisposed. Though, one has to understand – maintaining a healthy diet

and fitness routine can delay, but not prevent diabetes. Moreover, other factors like body fat

distribution and excess brown fat are also risk factors. Again, there are many people with lower body

mass indices that have diabetes.

Insulin is the cause of weight gain.

Is a complete myth. When our blood sugar is high, glucose tends to get excreted in the urine flushing

out some of the calories consumed. Once insulin treatment begins, those calories stay intact in our

body. And if diabetics consume extra calories than what they burn, they are bound to gain weight.

Diabetes and exercise does not go hand in hand.

People with diabetes need to balance their medication and intake of carbohydrates in order to

maintain healthy blood sugar levels. And, working out in moderation as advised by the doctor is

helpful for a person with diabetes.

People with diabetes are bound to have many more queries. And these queries need to be answered
