  1. On the way to Milford Sound, there is a nice walk back into the mountains to see “The Chasm.” I made the walk twice—alone and with Judy—and it was great.

  2. Immediately, after leaving the parking lot, you find yourself in heavy “jungle-like” vegetation.

  3. A nice bridge or two allowed crossings of smaller “chasms.”

  4. Left: a sign announces the slippery rocks at the Chasm in several languages. Right: massive tree along the way.

  5. Hard to capture the force of the water cutting the rock in the Chasm—it was loud and wet.

  6. The bridge allowed us to look straight down. The river gained speed as it rushed through the Chasm.

  7. After the river churned through the Chasm, it slowed down and moved on down the mountain.

  8. The huge ferns in the forest were amazing — this was probably eight feet across.

  9. After my first walk (alone), I returned to the car—to find Judy “captive” with a big Kea parrot on the roof.

  10. The Kea is a huge parrot. This guy kept trying to pry open the window—guess he wanted food!

  11. A sign in the parking lot gave some good information on the Kea.

  12. After the Chasm, Judy and I could see that we were getting closer and closer to the huge fjord called “Milford Sound.”
