Center for Teaching & Faculty Development University of Massachusetts Amherst July 17, 2012

- advantages and concerns? • Constructing a rubric • Apply to your disciplines • Parting thoughts and questions

  4. 甚麼是 rubric? • A scoring scheme that articulates (描寫/描述) the expectations for an assignment • Using a continuum to assess the “authentic” learning outcomes (情境學習) or complex tasks • Answering parents or students “why I got a B on this paper?”

• Advantages? 對學生: • improve their performance by clearly showing them how their work will be evaluated and what is expected. • help students become better judges of the quality of their own works. • provide students with more informative feedback about their strengths and areas in need of improvement. • allow assessment to be more objective and consistent.

• 對教師 – • force the teacher to clarify his/her criteria in specific terms • provide useful feedback to the teacher regarding the effectiveness of the instruction • reduce the amount of time teachers spend evaluating student work • allow assessment to be more objective and consistent.

Can’t substitute for good instruction Formulization (公式化) and may discourage creativity (例如:寫作) Validity, reliability and fairness of the rubrics It takes time to develop a good one

  9. 設計評估表格 分類: create a list of the most significant qualities or dimensions (primary traits – 主要特質,準則) of the work product or performance

4. Yes and more, yes, yes but, no

  12. Huh?

  15. 評估表格類別 Holistic/General (全面性的) Analytic/Specific

  22. Creating a Rubric for the Poster Evaluation

  24. Reflections What just happened? How was your approach different from when you developing other grading methods? What would you do differently next time? Any take away lessons for you?

Rubrics can teach as well as evaluate • Handout and explain before the assignment begins • Do involve students

  27. Additional Resources • Rubi Star • iRubric • Sample rubrics • http://course1.winona.edu/shatfield/air/rubrics.htm • A large collection of rubric websites of many different • colleges and universities • http://www.csub.edu/tlc/options/resources/handouts/ • Rubric_Packet_Jan06.pdf

  28. Parting Thoughts • Be a teacher first, a gatekeeper last • Be open to change • Seize the teachable moment • Emphasize student involvement

  29. Let your intentions create your methods and not the other way around
