Activation Energy . Every chemical reaction has to overcome the activation energy before it can begin. High temperature, high light intensity and high pressure accomplish this in non-living systems. In living systems the reactions cannot proceed at the same rate at the same temperature, or pressure etc without damaging the organism. Enzymes reduce the activation energy in living organisms and allow the reactions to proceed at body temperature (37 C).
