Finding primary and critical materials for Film Studies • Films: locating DVDs and videos in Oxford • Books, e-books, reference works and dissertations: subject searching on OLIS, Taylor and Francis e-books, [ASLIB] Index to Theses and Dissertation Abstracts • Scholarly articles: using periodical indexes (MLA) and databases (LION and Film Indexes International) to locate journal articles • Film reviews: professional and scholarly reviews (Lexis-Nexis) • Screenplays and scripts • Searching the WWW for film history and criticism

  3. Locating DVDs and videos in Oxford • Use WebLearn to find out about film collections across the University: http://www.weblearn.ox.ac.uk/site/human/modlang/eurocine/resources/ • Search for films on OLIS by title initially e.g. t=jules et jim videorecording tw=jules videorecording

Locating film books on OLIS using LC subject headings • Motion pictures--History • Motion pictures--Germany--History • Motion pictures--History and criticism • Motion pictures, French--Criticism and interpretation • Motion pictures, American--History and criticism • Historical films--History and criticism • Silent films--Japan--History and criticism • Motion picture plays--History and criticism • Film criticism • Hitchcock, Alfred 1899- --Criticism and interpretation • Motion pictures--Spain--Chronology • Cinematography

  5. E-books and Dissertations • Taylor and Francis Online e-book Library, via OxLIP. Available 24 hours a day; two hour time limit; searchable by keyword; option to print 5%. Do an initial keyword search on ‘film’ or ‘cinema’ to find relevant titles. • [ASLIB] Index to Theses (Great Britain and Ireland) and Dissertation Abstracts (USA), available via OxLIP. Cover more than 1.5 million doctoral dissertations and masters theses, with abstracts and some with 24 page previews.

Scholarly Articles • Use OLIS to retrieve a list of journals held in Oxford (s=motion pictures – periodicals) • Use TDNET to access specific electronic journals • Use the MLA to find journal articles on a particular topic (e.g. Italian neorealism) • Use LION to find journal articles and specific information on individual directors • Use the Film Indexes Online to locate articles related to specific films and directors
