  1. Ecology By: Jack Schnier

  2. What is Ecology?

  3. The study of how organisms interact with each other and how they interact with their environment.

  4. What are individual organisms?

  5. Smallest unit of study that ecologists concern themselves with

  6. What is a species?

  7. A group of the same type of organism that lives in the same place at the same time

  8. Populations are…?

  9. Groups of the same species that may or may not interact with each other

  10. What are communities?

  11. Groups of populations that are all interacting with each other at any given day or any given time • Ex: Soil, Air, Dirt, Water, etc.

  12. What are ecosystems?

  13. Lots of habitats in a generalized area put many ecosystems together and you get a biome.

  14. Biosphere’s are..?

  15. All of the places on Earth that living things survive, anywhere there is life would contribute to the biosphere. • Ex: highest peaks, lowest depths of the sea

  16. A habitat is a..?

  17. Group of communities all with very similar biotic and abiotic conditions.

  18. What is the difference between Abiotic factors and Biotic factors?

  19. Abiotic are not living • Biotic are living

  20. What are Decomposers?

  21. They are recycling nutrients during this process as they consume/break up dead materials/organisms

  22. What are Autotrophs?

  23. An organism that makes its own food

  24. Heterotroph are..?

  25. An organism that obtains its nutrients from other organisms

  26. What is a Herbivore?

  27. An organism that only eats plants

  28. What is a Carnivore?

  29. An animal that only eats meat

  30. Omnivore

  31. An organism that eats both plants and meat

  32. Saprobes are…?

  33. Decomposers

  34. Scavenger are…?

  35. Organisms that eat other dead organisms

  36. Producers, First Tropic Level

  37. Autotrophs

  38. Primary Consumers, Second Tropic Level

  39. Herbivores • 90% of energy is lost per level as you move up the pyramid

  40. Secondary Consumers, Third Tropic Level

  41. Carnivores or Omnivores • 10% of energy is left over

  42. Tertiary Consumer, Fourth Tropic Level

  43. Carnivores or Omnivores • 1% energy

  44. Quandary Consumer, Fifth Tropic Level

  45. Very little energy is found at this level • Usually never found at this level

  46. What is the difference between a food pyramid and a food web?

  47. A food pyramid is much like a chain with a specific order • A food web is much more complicated with different paths being followed

  48. What is Symbiosis?

  49. The relationship between 2 or more organisms, and how they interact with each other

  50. What is Mutualism?
