  1. Unit 3 Study Guide Answers • Please get your study guides out and get ready to study with me!!! 

  2. 1. Use ALL of the following words to write a description of how water changes state: • Water is an example of a physical change. • Water can be in a LIQUID, SOLID OR GAS state, but is still the same ENERGY. • You can FREEZE water as an ice cube. • You can MELT the ice cube back to a liquid. • Once the ice cube reaches it’s BOILING point of 100 degrees, it will turn to water vapor or CONDENSATION.

  3. 2. what effect does adding heat energy have on the density of a substance? • Density = mass/ volume • D = g/cm³ • Heat causes molecules to expand and at times loses energy. • Heat can cause the density of an object to become less dense.

  4. 3. Rank the following substances in order from MOST to LEAST dense. • Substance D Mass: 150g Volume: 15cm3 = 10 g/cm³ • Substance C Mass: 150g Volume: 25cm3 = 6 g/cm³ • Substance A Mass: 80g Volume: 40cm3 =2 g/cm³ • Substance B Mass: 20g Volume: 40cm3 = 0.5 g/cm³ • Formula for finding Density = • Density = Mass / Volume • (grams) / (Cubic Centimeters cubed)

  5. 4. Will any of the substances listed below float on water? If so, which one(s) and how do you know? If not, why not? • Water has a density of 1.00g/cm3 • Substance D Mass: 150g Volume: 15cm3 = 10 g/cm³ (no too heavy) • Substance C Mass: 150g Volume: 25cm3 = 6 g/cm³ (no too heavy) • Substance A Mass: 80g Volume: 40cm3 =2 g/cm³ (no too heavy) • Substance B Mass: 20g Volume: 40cm3 = 0.5 g/cm³ (yes, it’s density is less than 1.00 g/c3)

  6. 5. Label the following properties of water as either physical (P) or chemical (C):

  7. 6. Make a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting physical and chemical changes. Be sure to include at least 3 examples of each in your diagram.

  8. 7. List 5 clues you would look for to determine if a chemical change has taken place. • 1. Color change (like fireworks) • 2. Flammability • 3. Reactivity with Oxygen • 4. Bubbles release gas • 5. Tarnishing

  9. 8. What is the Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass state? • The Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass states that matter is NEITHER created nor DESTROYED. • Energy is just changed from one form to another. • Energy is not lost.

  10. 9. Does the following chemical equation balance obey or violate the LoCM? • If not, then balance it to show that matter is balanced on both sides.  • HCl2 + O3 2HCl2 + O6

  11. 10. How to study for your science test. • Read over all of your notebook notes taken in class. • Study your study guide. • Review any quizzes you have taken. • Know the difference between physical and chemical changes and their properties. • Know the Law of conservation of Matter/Mass. • Don’t wait until the last minute to study!
