  1. ENGINE OIL What does the label tell you? SAE 5W-20 API SERVICE Click on label markings to learn more about industry ratings. ENERGY CONSERVING CERTIFIED AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE FOR GASOLINE ENGINES Oil Brand Quiz

  2. American Petroleum Institute Service Symbol Also known as the API “Donut” ENERGY CONSERVING SAE 5W-20 API SERVICE Three components of the symbol are service, viscosity and energy conserving Click to view information about service levels Click to view information about an oil’s ability to flow using the Society of Automotive Engineer's Viscosity Grading system Click to view information about oils that conserve fuel Home

  3. American Petroleum Institute Service Rating Ratings fall into two basic categories: - “S” for Service or Spark Ignition Engines and - “C” for Commercial or Compression Engines. Below are some ratings for “S” category API SERVICE Home API Donut

  4. The center portion of the API donut displays the oil’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Viscosity Grade SAE standards rate the ability of an oil to flow at predetermined temperatures. An oil rated as 5W-20 flows at a rate of 5 when tested at 0 degrees F and at a rate of 20 when tested at 212 degrees F. The oil is tested at 212 degrees F to determine it’s viscosity in centistokes. Today's engines require multiple viscosity oils to maintain lubrication at all operating temperatures. Multiple viscosity oils are rated at 0 degrees F to determine their flow rate cold. “W” is referred to as winter rating. A straight weight oil will have only one number on its label. Always follow manufacturers recommendations and use the proper viscosity oil for hot or cold weather conditions. Example: From engine oil fill cap, SAE 5W-20 Home API Donut

  5. ENERGY CONSERVING American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), set the standards for Resource Conserving or Fuel Saving oils. This rating system began in 1994 to help auto manufacturers to communicate fuel savings of 0W-20 and 5W-20 multi-viscosity oils. These oils, when compared to standard test oil, have the ability to produce a 1% to 4% increase in fuel economy. The two ratings found in this area are EC and EC II. Home API Donut

  6. API Certification Symbol is also known as the “Starburst” Oils that show this symbol meet current engine protection and fuel economy standards of the International Lubrication Standardization and Approval Committee (ILASC). This committee includes American and Japanese auto manufacturers. The current ILASC standard is GF-5. CERTIFIED AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE FOR GASOLINE ENGINES Home
