  2. Project Goal To provide and support and effective solution for creating andmanaging websites and departmental business applications that meet the university’s security, communication, design and accessibility guidelines.

  3. Project milestones and timelines • Move existing websites to new platform-- Complete 12/31/08 • Move dept. applications to new platform-- Complete 2/27/09 • Upgrade CMS to latest version of Plone.-- Complete 4/03/09 • Migrate all static sites to Plone CMS-- Target 6/30/09

  4. 1. Move websites to new platform • Purchase and Install New Hardware • Ability to handle increasing requests • 3,000,000 requests per month • 50 – 100 requests per second • Higher Performance • More Scalability – Processing Power • More Memory • More redundancy – failover • Shut down old Athena Server.

Move existing applications to new platform • Before Move - Security risks – Many vulnerabilities • Plan : Segregate Apps into Departmental Virtual Environments • 41 Departments identified on VHOST • 23 Moved • 17 Removed (obsolete) • Post move – Vulnerabilities significantly reduced • Depts. Responsibility to correct Security Vulnerabilities. • Eliminate need to convert PHP to Java programs. • Java will be Platform for new Development.

  6. 3.Upgrade CMS to latest version of Plone • Step 1: (12/31/08) • Vendor Linux Box • Software configurations on New Hardware • Load Balancing, Caching, Optimization • Migrate Plone 2.5.3 to 2.5.5 • Step 2: (4/03/09) • Vendor Linux Box • Migrate 3rd Party Products • Migrate UofL Custom Products • Migrate Custom Skins • Migrate Plone 2.5.5 to 3.1.7 • Step 3: Post Migration Tuning

  7. 4. Migrate static sites to CMS • 464 identified (Athena) • 261 complete (56%) • 118 removed (17%) • 47 staging (10%) • 31 in review (7%) • 7 not started (2%)

Features of the Plone CMS • No extensive knowledge of HTML/CSS, etc. required • Built-in features: • Forms (e-mail & spreadsheet output) • Photo galleries • Calendar and news • RSS • Multimedia support • Audio podcasting • Working toward integrated video support • In-line editing • Workflow/version control • LDAP integration & granular permissions
