  1. The Odyssey and Mythology Why are they studied in the classroom?

  2. A multimedia presentation by Mrs. Wheaton’s 1st Hour English ClassFall 2010

  3. Part One:

  4. Part Two:

  5. Odysseus faced many challenges on his journey home…

  6. Part Three:

  7. Odysseus had to overcome many obstacles on his journey. The following journal entries express how Odysseus might have felt on his travels.

  8. I went to the Cyclop's cave, which went by the name of Polyphemus. I went out of sheer curiosity. All my men came along on the trip, even though they did not want to come. We arrived at the one-eyed beast's cave, and to our dismay, the giant monster was not in his home. I was disappointed, as for my men, they were in joy, and wanted to return to the boat immediately. I made them wait with me in the back of that dark, gloomy cave. Then, the hideous deformity that is so called a man returned to his cave. The Cyclops was in awe that we had the audacity to enter his cave. He yelled and screamed at my men, and ate two of them as a meal! I, at this point, was trying to construct a plan for my men and I to make it out of this cave alive. In the meantime, I was staying in the back avoiding being eaten. I kept divising a plan while the foul-odored being kept devouring my men in twos. Finally! I had the plan that would get my men out of harm's way. I offered the beast some of my finest drink, wine. Polyphemus drank the drink, and he loved it. He demanded more from the men. I gave him so much wine he got drunk and fell asleep. On the floor, Polyphemus's club was laying. I carved out a piece big enough to seriously injure the monster. I sharpened it to a stake. We plunged it into the Cyclop's one and only eye. He was blinded, and furious. He jumped up in a howl and yelled for his fellow neighbors. His neighbors came and ask what the problem was. Polyphemus answered, “Nohbdy has tricked me! Nohbdy has done me wrong!” So they left, and he went back to his cave in anger. The next day, I put my plan into action. I tied my men to his sheep, three to each. He checked his sheep before letting them out, not even aware that my men were slipping away from his grasp. We were free at last, and I yelled back in revenge. Polyphemus picked up a hilltop and threw it at our ships, almost hitting us. We sailed onward for home.

  9. My men and I were getting hungry, grouchy, and very impatient. We stopped on the land of where Helios's cattle graze. In the land of the dead, Teiresias told me that I was not to kill the cattle of Helios, or else there would be severe punishment. My men insisted on killing the cattle for food. I kept reinforcing the fact that there was fine bread and wine in our ship's cargo-hold. I went astray by myself to pray to the chief god, Zeus. Zeus, then by his almighty powers, put my eyes to sleep and my body to rest. While I was sleeping, the men grew weary of hunger and made a harmful decision. They killed the alpha of the group and made an offering with other members of the cowherd. Then, I awoke from my slumber. I rushed down the path only to have my eyes in dismay. My men had killed the cattle. I dropped to my knees and immediately prayed to the gods. Sun god, Lord Helios, burst into an angry downpour of words to Zeus to punish the unforgivable men. Helios was furious, shouting from his immortal resting place down on the men about how they were going to be punished until they have paid in full. We decided it would be best to set our masts to the winds and sail away from that angry god. We got out to sea, and Zeus sent forth a thunderbolt down from Mt. Olypmus. The thunderbolt hit the ship, and sank us all. All my men died, except for me. I had to swim, so I swam to the nearest place I saw. I landed on Calypso's Island, where I had been held prisoner for 7 dreadful years. My quest home was getting harder and more difficult as the days passed by.

  10. Me and my men were on Circe's island, and several of my men heard music up the path, so they went up the path to find Circe's home on top of a cliff. They decided to climb up to the house and go to the music they were hearing. When they got to the house, Circe invited them inside for tea, and the tea turned them into swine and she put them into a pin. One of the men escaped and climbed down the cliff and went to get Odysseus and the other men who had stayed back. When we had arrived to the other men they thought it was just a normal pig. But one of the men realized that it was one of the other men that had went up the path. That is when we all decided to go up the path where they had gone. When we reached the cliff, I told my men to stay at the bottom of the cliff while I climbed up. When I was climbing, Hermes, the messenger god, appeared and gave me something called a moly to prevent Circe from turning me into a pig. When I got to her home, she invited me in for some tea also. When I drank it she became afraid because the tea did not effect me, because the moly prevented it from happening. After we were done talking I persuaded the witch to turn my men back and let us go. Before we left, Circe told us that I had to go to the underworld and talk to the blind prophet. We then departed from the island and started our journey to the underworld.

  11. Just like Odysseus, teenagers today also face challenges and rewards on their journey through high school…

  12. It was the day of the prom and I was so excited. I got the prettiest dress they had at the mall and the best looking shoes and purse to go with it. I had gotten my hair fixed and got a manicure! My boyfriend got a limo for us to ride in to the  prom. It was so much fun riding in the limo! When we  got there the place was amazing! It was like we stepped into a winter wonderland, the floors had fake  snow on it, the walls and ceiling had snow flakes hanging from them. I just loved it so much! The dance floor was even better! They had a band, disco ball hanging from the ceiling and fake snow  falling. But the best thing was that the crown they had for the queen was beautiful! It was the perfect  match for the theme, it was crystal white and had diamond like jewels in it. Every girl was staring at it  hoping they could be the one to wear it and be the prom queen. But my friends kept telling me I would  totally be the queen. When the principal was up there announcing the queen, I felt like there were butterfly’s in my  stomach. He finally announced who the queen was, and it wasn't me. But my friends kept telling me it was ok that I wasn't queen. Because to them, I  was the queen of the dance. So I didn't fell so bad after that, I had the best night of my life. And I'm  glad I wasn't made queen of the dance because, I just needed my friends to make me feel like I was the  queen of the dance.

  13. The day I got my license was a great day. I remember it like it was yesterday. My nine months were finally over with and I was on my way to the DMV(department of motor vehicles). It was a struggle having my license because you have to focus on everything you do while you are driving. You can't speed, run a stop sign, text, or much else. If you have to text, have someone do it for you. Getting your license isn't a sign of freedom, you still have to be responsible and follow curfew. Those things about driving wherever you want, and staying out late are all myths. There are also some perks that come along with the ability to drive. You don't have to walk everywhere, you can listen to your own music instead of that old classic stuff. There are also some negative aspects to driving. You have to drive your little siblings everywhere, which takes up gas that you paid for. You also have to run errands for your parents and grandparents. Another negative aspect, the worst of all, you have to get a job and pay for insurance and bills. Getting a job means you have to have much more responsibility. While getting your license symbolizes one's growing up in the world, there is also some negative aspects to driving.

  14. Today I took the ISAT test, we had to sit in our first hour classes we couldn't talk until everyone one was done with that test. The ISAT was the hardest test I’ve ever took in my life most of it wasn't that hard but the math was the hardest, I worked out all the problems some of them were like the ones we did in class that year. I took my time made sure I did everything I knew to make sure I had enough time to go back and do the ones I was having trouble with, when I took the time to do I found out the answers. We got one break half – way through the testing. We got snacks during the break and got to talk to our friends, then we went back to testing, we did a writing test, that took a while, it was a little bit hard to think of every detail so that I knew that I did the best that I could. Then when testing was over we had a little bit of time to hang out with our friends and talk about the test and how we think we did and the teachers let us go to the gym and play basketball for a while before we had to get ready to get on the bus and go home. Finally we went outside to wait for the buses but I rode my bike with some of my friends and we went to go eat pizza at Domino's then we went to go ride around town, then we went bowling that night and ate more pizza.

  21. Imagery Group 1 About our slideshow: Odysseus was a strong leader, but he made many mistakes. He went into the cave to see the cyclops but didn't know that he would lose some of his men. One of his weakness is his curiosity. After he stabbed him in the eye, he ran out of the cyclops' cave. He came home dressed as a beggar. Odysseus' dog Argos, recognizes him and dies shortly after. His wife, Penelope, tests Odysseus to determine if he is her true husband by taking about their marriage bed. Then his son helps him defeat the suitors. Dalton Troehler, Trenton Litton, Ethan Thompson, Allissa Johnson, Kevin Kloeckner

  22. Imagery Group 2 About our slideshow: We chose the parents because they love their kids. The fireman we chose because they help us save lives. The policemen help us in everyday life. We chose the counselors because they help us talk about our problems. Teachers help us with homework and school problems. Odysseus was a modern day hero of his time because he went into the cyclops’ cave. He stayed in the cyclops’ cave. His men trusted him because they wanted him to help them get home and he trusted his wife not to marry anybody while he was gone. He was faithful with his wife. He was strong because he could string the bow. Kaitlyn Allen, Kaitlyn Holden, Morgan Penrod, Lane Childers, Maurice Boyd
