  2. Definition • Maladaptive or destructive to oneself or others- • It may exaggerate an acceptable behavior • It may be strange but not destructive

  3. Definition • Unjustifiable- • Without rational basis • The air bath? Benjamin Franklin partaking in an acceptable practice of the time. • Disturbing- • Troublesome to other people • This is the easiest criteria

  4. Definition • Atypical- • So different that they violate a norm • Hissing is a polite way to show respect for superiors in Japan • Public displays of affection between men and women are unacceptable in Thailand. However men holding hands is considered a sign of friendship. The use of straws is considered vulgar. • Ancient cultures used trephinging (cutting a hole in the skull to release evil spirits that might cause migraines or epilepsy. • Any behavior is atypical if it is not exhibited by 68 percent of a particular group or culture

  5. History • We know that the middle ages viewed them as demons…but then what • Philippe Pinel was the first physician to attempt to treat them. • He was Napoleon's physician • He found people in institutions that had been chained to the wall for 30-40 years • He decreased death rates of patients from 60-10% by encouraging treatment.

  6. History • When was the first hospital opened for mentally ill patients? • 1813 by Quakers • People could be admitted for any reasons • Divorced mothers • Out of wedlock mothers

  7. Medical Model Mental diseases have physical causes that can be diagnosed on the basis of their treatable symptoms. This model focuses almost exclusively on nature. This has lead to a slew of drugs to help control disorders

  8. Bio-Psycho-Social Model • Biological, psychological, and social factors combine to produce disorders • Genetic predisposition + our thoughts+ expectations and roles=disorder • Eating disorders in the US are like Susto in Latin America (fear of black magic) • Latah- uneducated middle-aged or elderly women in Malaya where unusual circumstances like tickling or the word snake cause the woman to repeat the word, uttering obscenities • Winigo-intense fear of being turned into a cannibal by a supernatural monster. Algonquin Indian hunters

  9. Classification • DSM-IV-TR • Has 17 major categories http://psychology.about.com/od/psychotherapy/f/faq_dsm.htm • Can be revised…homosexuality was dropped as was manic depressive, neurosis, passive aggressive • Studies have shown that 48% of Americans fit at least one of the categories at some point in their life. • Labels can be hard to shake…..if a disorder is like a disease, it can be treated….what does this mean?

  10. Labeling Disorders • What is the big deal? • How are people viewed when they have a mental disorder vs. a physical one? • Why? • Did Brittney Spears have a breakdown? What about Heather Loclear? • What about Thomas Eagleton? Pg. 525 • Should teachers know your labels?
