  1. Visual Rhetoric Shelby Briggs Photograph By: SigitPamungkas, Reuters1st place: BOP still photo winner/ enterpriseAugust 31, 2009On the first day of Ramadan, in a mosque filled with white-robed women, a child stands up and stands out.www.bopnppa.org

  2. Audience What audience do you think this photo appeals to? I think the audience could be anyone, the photo isn’t partial to anyone even when a particular group of people is the subject.

  3. Appeal Ethos: Do you think the source is credible? Yes, I believe so. The author is credible because he took this photo first hand. Pathos: When looking at this photo, how does it appeal to your emotions? When I first looked at this picture, I was struck with confusion. Then for some reason I felt that the girl had a large amount of strength that surrounded her. Logos: When you see this picture, does it appear logical to you? In a sense the odds of this occurring are rare, but when you take a closer look the chances become greater. Everything doesn’t look so “put together” at a second glance.

  4. Intention What do you think the author’s intention for this photograph was? How do you interpret this photograph?

  5. Point of View/Perspective When you see this picture, what is the main focus? Obviously it’s the young girl in red. What happens to be in the foreground? Background? I don’t think that it’s just a coincident that they both are filled with white-robed woman.

  6. Technique Ambiguous: Looking at the white-robed women, they all appear to be ambiguous. Their facial features aren’t detailed allowing the girl to stand out even more. Contrast: The focal point being red in a sea of white is definitely contrast. Not only are the colors contrasted but the levels at which the people are standing are also contrasting. Making the distinct level of where the girl is standing even more noticeable.

  7. Technique cont. Juxtaposition: If you were to see a girl standing like this all alone, it would just appear random, but since she is surrounded by all the commotion and white it makes her stance and position even more obvious.

  8. Composition Factors What do you think is significant about where the author took the photo? This way it gives the photo balance, if it was taken from the right or the left the balance would’ve shifted. What makes the picture different since it is taken from a higher vantage point? I think it gives the photo almost a godly perspective. I discussed earlier the role she played when it came to her religion. I believe that God views us all as individuals even when in a crowded area such as this.
