  5. Ottoman CultureClothing • Laws for clothing were very strict. • Women had to wear a veil that covered their face. • Men had to wear a fez. • Both were symbols of their Islamic faith.

  6. Ottoman Military • Janissary Corps- elite corps in the service of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). • It was composed of war captives and Christian youths pressed into service. • All the recruits were converted to Islam and trained under the strictest discipline.

  10. Safavid Empire • Was often at war with the Ottoman Empire • Ruler was called a Shah (king) • Greatest ruler was Shah Abbas • Capital was Isfahan • Shiite Islam was official religion

  16. Akbar • 14 years old when he received the throne • Tolerant of other religions • Peasants gave 1/3 of their harvest to the state • Trade and Manufacturing flourished due to peace and political stability

  17. Shah Jahan • Ruled from 1628-1658 • Many people lived in poverty because of heavy taxes • Loved to build extravagant buildings • Built the Taj Mahal • Put in prison by his son Aurangzeb
