  1. EU Projects in Tsinghua University Dr. Ying Zhao Assistant Professor High Performance Computing Institute Department of Computer Science Tsinghua University 2008.10.28 Tsinghua Teams: GridCOMP: Dr. Yongwei Wu (High Performance Computing Institute) FLOSSInclude: Dr. Kuan Zhang (Network Research Center )

  2. Two projects: Floss Include GridCOMP Each project: Brief project overview Our experiences Future collaborations Conclusion Agenda

  3. Free Software as a tool for social and economic development Project Facts: 2-year project started February 1, 2008 Funded by the European Commission, DG Information Society 11 experienced partners, in China, Netherlands, Spain, UK, South Africa (UWC), Ghana (AITI-KACE), Argentina, India, Cambodia Network research center in Tsinghua: Dr. Maoke Chen and Dr. Kan Zhang, and student volunteers The FLOSSInclude project(http://www.flossinclude.eu)

  4. Analysis of available data FLOSSWorld additional surveys Dissemination and networking: business public sector academia civil society Analysing requirements what is needed to promote use, development, deployment of Free Software in developing countries? case studies socio-economic requirements technical requirements Research approach, Methodology (1/2)‏

  5. Testing solutions: Validation and pilots identify promising solutions e.g. for localisation projects e.g. approaches for capacity building run pilot projects to test approaches Roadmap for future research cooperation highlight R&D that EU could support through international cooperation highlight successful approaches Research approach, Methodology (2/2)‏

  6. building regional competencies impact on governments & policy community link development and Free Software communities transfer working solutions from one region to another raise awareness for Free Software and open standards build lasting networks inside communities between communities Major Outcomes/Results

  7. if the EU-China collaboration was useful, successful ? We had very successful collaborations (Floss World), which led to this project. Collaborations on the two projects: Floss World and Floss Include, are very useful in terms of improving open source software development in China. if was it difficult for the Chinese partner to communicate with the European partners ? Through emails and meetings, we had effective communications with our European partners. any problems? Funding shrink! Feel budget pressure Experiences

  8. More Participations to meetings/forums from both sides: 7th Northeast Asia OSS Promotion Forum Open standards: Chinese OSS to the world society: Linux Open Office Future Collaborations

  9. Grid PROGRAMMING WITH COMPONENTS: AN ADVANCED COMPONENT PLATFORM FOR AN EFFECTIVE INVISIBLE Grid EU 6TH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME PRIORITY 2.5.4 ADVANCED Grid TECHNOLOGIES, SYSTEMS AND SERVICES GridCOMP

  10. GridCOMP main goal is the design and implementation of a component based framework suitable to support the development of efficient grid applications. Project Overview

  11. WP2:Component Framework Implementation Legacy Code Wrapping WP3: Non Functional Component Features Interaction with grid middleware/mechanisms - CGSP WP4: Grid IDE Monitoring of a set of components at execution Monitoring recourses WP5: Use Cases Biology Applications WP6:Dissemination and Collaboration Various activates Tsinghua’s Contributions

  12. if the EU-China collaboration was useful, successful ? Through this collaboration, EU and China have reached a lot of significant mutual technical benefits in the fields of Grid and distributed computing. if was it difficult for the Chinese partner to communicate with the European partners ? We did not encounter any difficulty to communicate technical issues with the European partners. any problems? we would like to have more opportunities to actively propose our ideas and get these ideas accepted by the Europeanpartners. Our Experiences

  13. Take more active roles in research and development. Grid Applications in China Successful European Grid projects, find applications in China. Identify key applications in China, establish collaborations at different levels: application, application support, middleware, etc. Research Collaborations Cloud and Grid Computing, High performance and distributed Computing, distributed data mining,.. Future Collaborations

  14. Our past collaborations were very successful. More projects: ASIA-LINK EA Grid (EuropeAid) Tsinghua-Cambirdge (EU Program) Looking forward to more collaborations. Thanks! Conclusion
