Operation Barbarossa • June 22 • Take control of Russia to gain resources, agricultural products, human population, and crush Soviet Communist regime • Germany divides into three army groups • North Army Group sent to seize Baltics and Leningrad • Army Group Centre sent to advance Smolensk • Army Group South sent to seize Ukraine, southern Russia, ultimately oil fields in Russia • Germany underestimated strength and production, Red Army resistance, and geographical obstacles • Germany’s wants were unreal due to underestimation • Germany’s offensive stalled at first in Russia’s Autumn Rains, stopped within sight of Kremlin by Russia’s winter and Soviet counter attacks

Pearl Harbour • December 7 • Naval Base attacked by Japanese fighters and torpedo planes in two waves • United States declared war on Japan • Japanese major tactical victory • Preventative action in order to keep the US Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions the Empire of Japan was planning

  4. Fall of Hong Kong • Began December 8 and ended on Christmas Day • Lasted 18 days • Began 8 hours after the Pearl Harbour attack • 4500 British/ Commonwealth killed • 6500 Prisoners of war from the British/ Commonwealth • 2750 Japanese killed • Continuation of Japan vs China • Hong Kong was under British rule • Japanese destroyed what little aircraft the British had at Kai Tak Airport

Fall of Hong Kong Continued • December 10- Japanese advance 15 miles into Hong Kong • December 12- oil tanks and dockyards of Kowloon are destroyed • Hong Kong left with lack of air and naval defense • December 13- last of Commonwealth retreats to mainland • December 18- Japanese cross harbour • December 20- island split in half between forces • December 25- surrender to the Japanese • Final day known as “Black Christmas”
