  1. Chapter 19 Lesson 1 Converting Metric Units

  2. AVID Three-Column Notes Metric system base-ten system Metric prefixes relate each unit to the base unit, such as meter, gram, or liter. Metric System length capacity mass The amount a container can hold The distance from beginning to end The amount of matter in an object Base unit: meter Base unit: liter Base unit: gram

  3. Relating Metric to Decimal To convert between metric units n decimal places apart, multiply or divide as follows. Multiply by 10n smaller unit larger unit Divide by 10n

  4. Example 1 – Converting Metric Units of Length To find the length in kilometers of a race that is 3200 meters long, convert 3200 meters to kilometers. You are converting from a smaller unit (meters) to a larger unit (kilometers), so divide by a power of 10. From meters to kilometers, the decimal point is moved 3 places to the left, so divide by 103, or 1000. Answer: 3200 meters = 3.2 kilometers

  5. Example 2 – Converting Metric Units of Mass and Capacity a. 15 g = ? mg b. 590 mL = ? L In a. you are converting grams to milligrams, multiply by 1000. Answer: 15 g = 15,000 mg In b. you are converting milliliters to liters, divide by 1000. Answer: 590 milliliters = 0.59 liters

  6. Example 3 – Comparing Metric Units a. 15 g = ? mg b. 590 mL = ? L In a. you are converting grams to milligrams, multiply by 1000. Answer: 15 g = 15,000 mg In b. you are converting milliliters to liters, divide by 1000. Answer: 590 milliliters = 0.59 liters
