Goal of AVID • To give students the skills required to be college ready • A consequence of AVID is that students will meet college eligibility requirements • In 11th and 12th grades, AVID course time will spend time doing college searches, personal statement writing, college applications, financial aid applications, and scholarship applications.

  3. What is AVID • AVID is a college readiness program • AVID will work on academic skills with your student: • Note taking – Cornell Notes • WICOR • W – Writing • I – Inquiry • C – Collaboration • O - Organization • R – Reading • Socratic Seminars • Tutorials

  4. What AVID isn’t • Study Hall • An automatic way to get good grades • A place to work one-on-one with a teacher • Extra help for current classes

Kennedy High • Structure: • Block Schedule • Students take 8 classes per year vs. 6 classes within a traditional schedule • In 9th grade – English 9 is paired with Academic Literacy, so students have English content all year long • Algebra 1 is paired with Algebra Support so that students have Algebra all year long • AVID will take 2 elective spaces each year

Block Schedule • September – January • English • PE • Science • AVID • February – June • English • Computers/Health • Geometry • AVID This is a sample schedule – students will get schedules tonight and will have an opportunity to make adjustments before getting the final schedule on Thursday at Maze Day.

  10. High School is Expensive! Less Thought of, but IMPORTANT Expenses • PSAT/PLAN/EXPLORE - Tests – 9th-11th($35, $15) • SAT/ACT Tests - Spring 11th grade, Fall 12th grade($45-$48) • College Applications 12th Grade Costs Vary ($55 & up) • AP Tests – Whenever taken ($90 per test)
