State Distinguished Achievement Graduation Requirements • PLUS • Four of the following advanced measures are required: • A score of 3 or above on any College Board Advanced Placement Exam • A grade of 3 or higher on courses that count for college credit, including tech prep programs • A commended (semi-finalist or finalist) score on the PSAT • Locally articulated courses identified in a local tech-prep articulation agreement between a college and a school district.   8. Mathematics The Recommended Program requires: • Algebra I • Geometry • Algebra II • Additional SBOE approved Math course

  9. Science The Recommended Program requires: • Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Additional Science Elective (AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Environmental Systems, Aquatic Science, Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, IPC,[8th grade accelerated],etc.)

  10. Social Studies The Recommended Program requires: • World Geography • World History • US History • US Government (+ Economics)

  11. Fine Arts • Art • Dance • Choir • Theatre • Band

  12. Physical Education 1 Credit Required for Graduation 4 total credits are allowed for graduation purposes. The following substitutes for PE in the FALL Only • Marching Band • Drill Team • Cheerleading Athletics may substitute for up to 4 credits of PE. *Dance I may earn Fine Arts Or PE credit.

  14. Athletics • High School athletics are very competitive. • Students who are not currently playing a sport either in middle school or on a competitive team should contact the appropriate coach prior to registering for that sport. Contact information is on the “Athletics and Fine Arts Options” information sheet online on the Counselor’s website.

  15. Technical Credit There are several options for next year! • Refer to pg. 2 in your Program of Studies for courses that satisfy the technical credit • Business Information Management I/II, Digital and Interactive Multimedia, Computer Maintenance, Computer Technician, Principles of Information Technology, Concepts of Engineering, Computer Science, Touch Systems Data Entry, Animation, Video Game Design, Web Technologies, Graphic Design and Illustration, Audio/Video, Independent Study in Tech Apps.

  16. Speech • Communication Applications or Professional Communications is required.

  17. Other Languages • Levels I and II of the same language (State Recommended) • Levels I, II, and III of the same language ( DAP) Any language other than English Latin A S L Spanish French

  18. CREDITS • Credits are recorded on the transcript at the end of each semester. • Class rank is calculated in September, February and June. • Classes are on a semester by semester basis. If a student fails a required course for the semester they must retakethe semester of that course, or regain the credit by making 70 or higher on a credit by exam. • REMEMBER! 26 STATE credits are needed for graduation on the Recommended plan or above.

  19. What is a transcript?

  20. To be promoted: Students need a total of 6 credits at the end of the freshman year. Basically , that means passing 6 classes first semester and 6 classes second semester. Remember that a student must be in attendance 90% of school days in order to earn credit. “Seat time” may be needed to regain credit lost for attendance. Attendance is important!!!

  21. Pre-AP/AP Classes Pre-Advanced (PAP) courses are designed to prepare students for the entry into Advanced Placement (AP) courses and to meet the unique needs of qualified students. Basic content is the same as the regular course, but instruction allows for more in-depth and accelerated pacing. Preparation time (outside of school) is estimated to be 1- 1 ½ hours per class period.

  22. AP and PAP Programs • GCISD is allowing open enrollment in PAP and AP programs, however it is always best to consider outside activities, previous academic record, and the time commitment required for advanced level courses when making your course selections.

Requirements for GT Programs (* If previously qualified, your student will STILL qualify) Minimum score of 125 on any one of the following aptitude measures: • Verbal • Nonverbal • Quantitative Minimum score of 95th percentile on any one of the following achievement measures: • Reading • Social Studies • Science • Mathematics Must meet two of the three following criteria • Minimum of 90 GPA in the previous semester • Minimum of 18 on the Student Self-Assessment • Minimum of 60 on 2 Teacher Checklists

  27. Off Campus Classes • Some courses are offered at Grapevine High School and the GCISD Swim Center. A shuttle is provided by the district. Please be aware of signing up for GHS classes (designated by GHS on registration sheet). • Gymnastics(Must provide own transportation)

Hints for Course Selection • Choose classes that will challenge, but not overwhelm you. • Gains in GPA and class rank come from a combination of challenging courses AND good grades. • If a course was too difficult in the past, it is quite possible that the next level course will be too difficult as well. Talk with your teacher for advice. • Map out a time management plan identifying preparation time for classes, time requirements for extracurricular activities and free time.

  29. Choices Planner • Each child will have a Personal Learning Plan • Break out session on Choices planner will be at 7:45 in the library.

  30. Course Request Verifications will be available online April 19th –May 1st. “Beginning of School Information” letter mailed in late July ALL SCHEDULE CHANGES MUST BE REQUESTED BY May 1st.

  31. Schedule Changes • All schedule changes will be address at Schedule pick up in August. • Requests will be honored based on course availability

Course Selection Dates • CHHS Counselors will be visiting the middle schools on the following dates: • February 4th- CMS • February 5th-HMS • February 7th- GMS IMPORTANT! • Students must enter their course selections online between Feb 8th and March 21st! You must use the student’s Skyward login, not the parent’s!
