  1. God and the Enlightenment NEW WAYS OF THINKING

  2. God ExistsShort 4 Corner Debate • WHAT PROOF DO YOU HAVE? • Religious Experience Argument • Directly experiencing God. • Miracles Argument • The existence of events that seem to contradict the laws of nature • Is this enough Proof???

  3. First Effort to PROVE God • Scholasticism – Medieval effort to fuse faith and reason • Aristotle: The Prime Mover Argument for God • Something HAD to start everything. Nothing comes from Nothing. The prime mover is God • IS THIS ENOUGH PROOF???

  4. Deductive Reasoning • Deductive=Descartes = START WITH THE CONCLUSION AND PROVE IT!!! • Geometrical Proof (Descartes was the father of geometry – DON’T QUESTION THE GIVEN) • If a series of premises are known to be true, then the conclusion must be. • Example: MONTY PYTHON THE WITCH

  5. Inductive Reasoning • A series of premises most likely are true, So the conclusion is most likely true. But test to verify!!! • Later Refined into the Scientific Method by Francis Bacon • Ask a question, gather evidence, construct a hypothesis, test, analyze, MAYBE arrive at a theory.

  6. Proof of God Moral Argument • 1) ALL Human beings have developed moral codes over time. • 2) The development of moral codes suggest that man has a conscience. • 3) So where did this conscience come from? • 4) GOD!!!

  7. Proof of God Cosmological Argument • The universe had a beginning (some today point to the Big Bang). • What was the cause of the Big Bang? • Aristotle’s Prime Mover Argument now based on… • Newton’s First Law of Motion Proves! • An object will remain at rest unless acted upon by an external force

  8. Proof of God Teleological Argument • The universe and the human body is so complex (and so fragile). • This complexity and fragility could not have developed through chance & happenstance. • Augustine of Hippo developed this argument • TODAY CALLED INTELLIGENT DESIGN • 1.618 the Golden Ratio / Fibonacci Sequence / The God Number

  9. Mind Blown by Anselm of CanterburyOntological Argument • 1) By definition, God is a perfect entity • 2) God exists in ALL of our minds (in that ALL can at least conceive of a God). • 2) It is possible that a God exists in reality. • 3) If God ONLY exists in our minds, then it is possible for God to be greater than He is (by being real). This is a contradiction of our definition of God. • It is, therefore, false for God only to exist in our minds. Therefore, God must possess reality.

  10. DeismA “Religion of the Enlightenment” • Existence operates on a series of rational laws established by God (Natural Laws). • These laws could be discerned through human reasoning (a gift from God). • Since God is rational being, human reasoning could be used to understand God. God is all around us. • No need for organized religions, Holy Books, priests or miracles.
