Undulator Field Integral Corrections

This project aims to minimize the impact of undulators on the beam by applying field integral corrections. The correction must work at the proper x position, even with exchangeable undulators. Various measurements and tests will be conducted to ensure accurate corrections.

  2. The Problem Bext_tunnel Bext_tunnel ≠ Bext_lab Steel Bext_lab

  3. Requirements • BBA Minimize impact of undulators on beam I1x,y < 40x10-6 Tm I2x,y < 50x10-6 Tm2 • Beam Curvature Apply multiple shims to keep phase errors small Open question, # shims required • Correction vs K The correction must work at the proper x position, even with exchangeable undulators Open question, what range of x will correction work over

  4. Correction Step 1 Standard Tuning Straighten trajectory Fix phase errors Granite bench, Hall probes, Short coil No steel Expect I1 and I2 near specified limits

  5. Correction Step 2 Long Coil Measurements At granite bench (alignment) 150 turns I1, I2 ten times better than spec, x & y LCLS-TN-05-22 No steel Good check of Hall probe measurements

  6. Correction Step 3 Helmholtz Coil Tests Use 2’nd measurement bench Build 2’nd coil system Build Helmholtz coil for Bext Test correction schemes 2 shim sites, 3 shim sites correction vs x

  7. Correction Step 4 • Check Effect of Girders and Supports • Measure fields with and without girder and supports • Check all girders in production to look for anamalies

  8. Correction Step 5 Tunnel Measurements Mount 2’nd coil system and undulator on girder Transport to each location ahead of installation Make a set of shims or shim data for that location
