MEET YOUR FOREFATHERS:The History of the Battle BATTLE SPREADS THROUGH THE COUNTY: After two years of local battles, Essrig, along with Elementary Media & Technology, decided to pilot a District Battle of the Books. The first Hillsborough County District Battle of the Books was held on May 19, 1995, at Essrig Elementary School. The participating schools were Apollo Beach, Buckhorn, Cannella, Claywell, Essrig and Schwarzkopf. Essrig Elementary became the first Champion of the District Battle of the Books. CLICK WHEN DONE READING. THE BATTLE COMES TO TAMPA: The Battle of the Books began in Hillsborough County in 1992 at Essrig Elementary School. It was started by a fourth grade teacher, Barbara Snuffer, who heard about the program from her sister, a teacher in Virginia Beach. With the help of the Virginia Beach School District, Essrig launched their Battle of the Books program. CLICK WHEN DONE READING. How did it get started? THE VERY BEGINNING: The Battle of the Books, a motivational quiz show, has been widely used across the United States. It can be traced back to a public radio program in Chicago during the 1940’s, and, more recently, to a statewide program in Alaska. CLICK FOR THE NEXT FRAME. THE BATTLE LIVES ON TODAY: During the following school year of 1995 – 1996, the Battle of the Books was opened to all schools in Hillsborough County. Forty-one schools participated in the second year. In the following ten years, Battle participation has grown to over 120 schools. THE END What is the “Battle of the Books,” anyway?

  10. The Battle Notebook • Creating a battle notebook is a great way to keep track of your thinking as you read each book. It is also an excellent resource to use as you prepare for the battle. Get your head in the game soldier! The next five slides will help you to create your battle notebook . . .

  11. Battle Notebook Create your own Battle Notebook as you read each book. Follow these tips and you will have a great resource to refer back to as you prepare for the battle! Happy Reading! Use your notebook when you need to bulk up your skills!

  12. Summarizing As you read, use this section of your notebook to write a summary of what you are reading. When you are preparing for the battle, this is a great place to visit to refresh your memory. Click the notebook for some SUPER Summarizing Strategies

  13. Story Elements These graphic organizers can help you recall the essential parts of the books. They can also be used to help you write your summary. There is a graphic organizer for each battle book. Click on the pencil to get your graphic organizers

  14. Vocabulary As you read and come across new words, add them to this section of your notebook. This will not only help your comprehension, but using these words to your improve your writing too! Click on the dictionary for a great way to keep track of your new words.

  21. TEAM WORK • Teamwork is key when going into battle soldier. • Remember you must… Know your Mission: Click on your commander to learn the rules. Listen to your fellow soldiers. If two agree, then go with that answer. Work together! Share the work! Decide who knows which books the best and be the expert of your books to help your team. Talk to your comrades. Let them know what you are thinking. Remember arguing gets you no where but out of time.

  22. PRACTICE SESSIONS To be your best soldier, you must practice… Know the important events and quotes of your books. You can accomplish this goal by studying your notes. Practice with others: classmates or teams. Challenge your comrades to finish the quote before you read it all AND name the book and author(s). Practice with timers and bell. You have 15 seconds to answer after buzzing in. Remember do not buzz in early. Listen for the bell. All hands on buzzers! Practice with the buzzer. Sit with the captain in the middle.

  23. DEALING WITH STRESS Don’t be an Ava, soldier! Follow these tips. Take some time to relax: play outside, watch TV, talk with a friend. Stay positive! You’ve been trained soldier! Keep a notebook by your bed. Write down your thoughts instead of letting them run through your head. If all else fails, drink some warm milk. Click on book to meet Ava. After viewing, click on screen.

  24. The Night Before Don’t Crash n’ Burn Soldier! Let’s Review your notes and relax. Click on the plane. (Link to book summaries.) • Skim and Scan your notes on the books. • Skim – is used to quickly identify the main • ideas of a text. It also works well to find • dates, names, and places. • Scan – You search for key words or ideas. • *Don’t forget about your practice quotes.* Chill Out – play a game or two. Click on the Eagle. YOU MADE IT SOLDIER! Now show us what you’ve learned and have FUN!! Know the rules. Click on the ship to review. Get a goodnight’s rest! Go to bed early and eat a good breakfast when you wake.
