Life History!!! • Diet: Omnivore • Size: Standing its 4 to 5 feet • Weight: Goes from 73 to 180 pounds • Birth: They give birth every 8 years. Have 1 at a time. • Life Span: Up to 35 years
Facts!!! • The males are loners. While they go through the woods they make loud calls to make sure they stay out of the way of each other. • Their calls can be heard 1.5 miles away. • They stay with their mothers for up to 8 years until the next baby is born. • Will only have 2 or 3 babies they whole life. • Males are ready to make babies at 8 years old, but the females aren’t ready until they reach their teens.
Endangered!!! • Orangutans are one of the most critically endangered of the apes, due to poaching and habitat loss. • We lose more than 2000 Orangutans each year. • The main reason orangutans are endangered is because of the loss of their habitats.
How many left?? • There are an estimated 30,000 orangutans left in the wild. • 20,000 on Borneo and under 10,000 on Sumatra.
