  5. Determine Area of Interest • Market survey • Find area not served by other standards • Differentiate yourself • How is this standard different from others • Ally with similar groups • Utilize work done in other standards

  6. Gather Critical Mass • Recruit the major players • Don’t be a standard of one • Open to all • Best ideas for extensions • Recruit implementers • Find companies that have a track record for implementing standards • Recruit standard players • Companies that have clout by name alone

  7. Publish Standard • Limit scope • Don’t be standard to end all standards • Set reasonable expectations • Limit release cycle to year or less • Be diligent • Avoid increase in scope • Conference calls • Face-to-face meetings

  8. Get the Message Out • Implement! • Marketing, marketing, marketing • Publish to the web • Follow-up on web inquires • Targeted e-mail • Talk to the press • Invite research groups to meetings • Attend and promote at other events
