  1. BadmintonStriking skillsBy Casey Lovell

  2. Basic Skills • Grip • Underhand vertical hits (how many in a row) • Overhand vertical hits • Combine both • Wall drill

  3. Partner Skills • Partner up and simply volley back and forth using any method that they can to get it to there partner. Note: no net is used yet • Using a net continue the same skill. • When they feel comfortable they should attempt to adjust there arm angle to strike to birdie in different directions towards there partner.

  4. 3 Important strikes in Badminton • Overhead clear • Overhead smash • Low serve

  5. Overhead Clear

  6. Overhead Clear • The birdie will be tossed up in the air and struck at an angle as to hit it deep into the opponents court. • The opponent should catch the birdie then toss it up him/herself and execute the overhead clear. • When comfortable the students should be able to do this back and forth with out stopping the rally.

  7. Overhead Clear • Changing the environment • Returning the birdie with a clear (angles of the body) • Height of a good clear (string) • Cones for landing • Buckets to aim for

  8. Overhead Clear • Additional sports that can be played that will help build skill level of the over head clear through transfer of learning. • Baseball (Throwing from the outfield) • Tennis (Sending a deep hit ball back across court) • Football (Quarterback throwing a deep pass)

  9. Overhead Smash

  10. Overhead Smash • A powerful overhead swing much like that of a professional tennis players serve. • Birdie is struck at about a 35 degree angle and should be un-returnable. • This can be a single person drill or a partner drill.

  11. Overhead Smash • Changing the environment • Adjust the dead zone (novice-advanced) • Net height adjustment • Birdie placement • Court striking point

  12. Overhead Smash • Additional sports that can be played that will help build skill level of the over head clear through transfer of learning. • Spiking a volleyball over the net • Pitching a ball at a downward angle • Smashing a ping pong ball in table tennis

  13. Low Serve

  14. Low Serve • This is a gentle strike barely clearing the net and landing past the opponents short serve line. • Serves should vary in angle and directions in which they land. • Just as the overhead smash, the court will be of use for this skill.

  15. Low Serve • Changing the environment • String 12 inches above net • Cones 12 inches past the short serve line • Visual objects help with aiming points • Modifications • Adjust the height of the string • Adjust height of the net • Move the cones accordingly

  16. Low Serve • Additional sports that can be played that will help build skill level of the over head clear through transfer of learning. • Under hand tosses of a baseball or softball • Pickle ball serves • Table tennis serves • Underhand serve in volleyball
