Reminders • Extra Credit: DUE Tuesday 12/11/12 (no late work) • Find a current event that exemplifies each of the following terms: • Federalism, Rule of Law, Consent of the Governed, Representative Democracy and Checks and Balances • Include a different current event for each term • For each, include one paragraph that summarizes the current event • For each, include one paragraph that explains how each term relates is exemplified by the current event. • Projects Due Today!   3. Sponge • What is the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony? • AND why do people commit crimes?

  4. Sponge Answer • Felony: Crime punishable by a heavy fine, imprisonment, or even death (Murder, robbery, assault, or kidnapping) • Misdemeanor: a lessor wrong and may be punished by a lighter fine and/or shorter jail term. (Traffic Violation, underage drinking)

Independent PracticeDUE AT THE END OF CLASS Using pages 727 -736 in your text book, answer the following questions: • Define: Common Law, Criminal Law, Felony, Misdemeanor, Civil Law, Jury, and Jurisdiction • What types of punishments can one receive for a felony? • What types of crimes fall under a felony? What types of crimes fall under a misdemeanor? • Explain the difference between Criminal and Civil Law. • What is the difference between a petit and a grand jury? • Explain the difference between Magistrate Courts, Municipal Courts, Juvenile Courts, General Trial Courts, and the State Supreme Court. • What are three ways a judge may obtain their job. • Draw a picture that represents Criminal Law and draw a picture that represents Civil Law. • Draw a picture that represents the ENTIRE Judicial Branch (Supreme Court all the way to Trial Courts)
