  1. Good Afternoon!! • NVC • Warm up: Wanna get away? • Romanticism and Nationalism Essential Question: How did Romanticism both reflect and fuel the changes in Europe during the 1800s?

  2. Warm up: Getting away from it all… Have you ever wanted to escape it all? Have you ever day-dreamed about a place where everything is awesome and perfect? What do you think about and why do you think about these things?

  3. ROMANTICISM: A Response to the Industrial Revolution

  4. Because who would want this life 24/7?

  5. Europe c.1790-1840 • The Industrial Revolution has changed society • Pollution, endless work • People feel dehumanized • The Enlightenment Revolutions failed • Congress of Vienna tries to stop future revolution • People know the individual has value, but they feel alienated

  6. Romanticism • Artists are the critics of society • Reacting againstthe Enlightenment,failed revolutions, and the Industrialization • Emotion > Reason • Nature > Society • “Romantic” = idealistic, fantasy, unrealistic

  8. Nature • Glorification of Nature • An escape from Industrialization • Theme of the rugged, lonely individual

  9. Exoticism • Exoticism: Interest in exotic, foreign lands • Reflects a desire to escape from reality • Fuels a desire to acquire new and different things

  10. Nationalism • NATIONALISM: loyalty and pride in a nation of people that share common culture and history • Nationalism led to REVOLUTION • Crushed by Congress of Vienna/Concert of Europe • Kept alive in ART!

Nationalism cont. • Glorification of heroes and heroic actions to show pride in your nation • France c.1848 • King Charles X = absolute monarch • Nationalist revolution overthrows king and creates a new republic • Louis-Napoloen (aka Napoleon III) now in charge • Rise of Nationalism throughout Europe will fuel Imperialism
