BSP2 Goals (2011-2015) • Empower biologists to be modelsof scholarly teaching and practitioners of science education research. • Expand and support a highly interactive community of Biology Scholars committed to scientific teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). • Catalyze deep networks among life science professional societies to collectively engage in sustained undergraduate education reform.

Residency Goals(continuum of professional development) • Research (SoTL Institute) • Complements HHMI/NAS Summer Institute in Undergrad Biology • Design research in learning biology • Skills to create, design and implement studies to assess learning • Transition (From Research to Publishing Institute) • Practice evidenced-based research • Skills to identify stages of and responses to preparing work for publication • Assessment (Measuring Student Impact Institute) • Design course goals and assessments grounded in research on learning • Skills to create, design, plan and implement evaluations • New in 2011 All promote a community of practice for consultation and support

  7. Findings: 2009 Study • Scholars have different levels of understanding, practice & comfort • Assessing student learning • Conducting research on their teaching • Scholars’ research represent their professional interests and are unique to their institutions and students they teach.
