  2. Thesis Many people may argue that torture should never be acceptable; however, I believe in extreme cases it is acceptable.

  3. Methods of torture include: • Water boarding • Denying sleep • Denying food • Denying water

  4. Not all methods involve pain • Sleep deprivation • Water Boarding

  5. Torture is not all physical pain; there are methods that are designed for mental torture.

  6. Reasons for using torture • Obtain a confession • Obtain information • To punish • To make the sufferer or others to act in certain ways

  7. An idea for torture is government officials could use the information extracted for counter terrorist purposes.

  8. 9/11 • U.S. presidential administration began to discuss a “new normalcy” In which the threat of a similar terrorist attack was constant and universal

  9. 9/11 cont. • Those responsible for the attacks had used the legal limitations placed on the US governments ability to monitor citizens day-to-day lives

  10. People with direct contact with the hijackers from 9/11

  11. If torture was a legal method of extracting information from someone, terrorist attacks could be stopped or prevented.

  12. Extreme Cases

  13. During 2005, in Iraq alone, there was a total of 11,611 deaths do to car bombs.

  14. Terrorists target many different heavily populated places.
